Could you use a used commercial cooling condensor for a transmission cooler, I already have one transmission cooler, but think more than one could not hurt... or I could change, my current one out as I have a few condensors that have more rows than the ones I see in the auto parts stores.

come to think of it, if you can find a way to mount it, you could probably use them for the PS coolers too, and I dont see why you could not use them as an oil cooler,,, I am not sure how to plumb that, but it could not be that hard

it could be slick to make a plate that goes between the oil filter mount and the filter, with a port on the return that goes into the cooler

they are made of copper, have only one in and one out

any input?
anyone try this?
it seems like the cooling affect would be better than the tiny aftermarket ones you get at the stores, probably cheaper and better.

I think I have 1 or 2 laying around and a few a/c techs that might be able to source more

unless someone thinks the residual oil from the freon would damage something, I think it could be cleaned out,,, somewhat.

let me know if you know what I dont know

Most of the 'home' refer condensors are small bore; combined with the length, I'd think there would be excessive restriction. . . .otherwise, danged good thought.

The other thought, re refers's, the condensor is kinda larger: my fridge's unit is almost 2' by 2', although there's a lot of air gap between the parallel pipes.

G'Luck

i have some from commercial refrigerators and freezers where the compressor went bad, the pipe diameter is 3/8-5/16, and is probably 12 x 12, about the same size as the aftermarket cooler I have, now it is thicker,,

the pipe seems to be the same diameter as the transmission hose and the power steering hose, but I dont know about the oil passages, and about going thru the cooler would it cause a flow issue

I've never seen one that had big enough passages/tubes for use as an engine oil cooler. For an ATF cooler, maybe. Would depend on the pressure drop of the unit. Seems overkill for a PS cooler. I use the OE auxiliary ATF coolers from 80's-90's Ford pick-ups for PS coolers.

For ATF cooling I buy a 12" x 12" x ~1.125" stacked plate cooler since I don't want to trust an spendy trans to an iffy cooler.

How many people run PS coolers on their 60 series? Does it help the life of the parts and fluid? What are the advantages over the stock design? Do we do anything during our offroading that would cause the need? (i.e. trany cooler when rock crawling.)

Guys running steering rams in particular need coolers. For the rest of us a cooler is a good idea, though 60's come with a long tube 'cooler' in the return line. For a solely DD use I don't see any need to upgrade unless you want to. The harder that you push the vehicle, the more a cooler will help the PS parts live.

I thought that stock FJ62's has a pipe style steering cooler? This gets upgraded when hydraulic steering comes into play then?

My 60 has such on it, too.
Either upgraded or augmented, what ever makes you happy. :)

My 62 does not have a ps cooler, it has an engine oil cooler and of course the transmission cooler in the radiator, I have a 12x12 x about .5 new transmission cooler, but it is basically a single row, the condensor I have in mind is about 12x12 x 1.5 2 row, copper, I am considering putting it in line with the existing 2 coolers, I have not decided where, I might put it infront of the radiator/ac condensor, but would like to see it somewhere cooler, maybe if I can fit an electric fan on it

now that I think about it I just junked 2 fans,, they were in a 120v toaster, but might have been 12v,,

Ill have a look under the 62 and see if there is a good place to tuck it into,,

I thought all 60/62's had a metal tube in the PS return line that ran under the radiator. It is a cooler, though not what most would consider a conventional one.

They do, the tube just does not seem like a cooler to most.
