Anybody know the person who won this auction? Wonder if this rig will really make it to the US?

Looks like it went for $19,100.

I was surprised it went for that much, amazing what the promise of US legality can add to the value.

The person is listed as being in the US and from loooking at their buying history they are into biodiesel, so....

It would be interesting to know what state they are in and also interesting to see if they respond if someone asks them how the truck was imported, I wonder if the seller tells them not to tell. Anyone gonna ask?

I did email the buyer out of curiosity but have not received a response.

Conversion to LHD is not impossible.

All the vehicles on this site have been converted to LHD:
http://www.sbmcauctions.com/webpages/info.asp

Left and right hand drive conversion are done all over the world and are very common in OZ where Left hand Drive is not allowed, not at all. They do many sports car conversions.

left or right hand drive is not an issue in the united states. Some will say it is illegal but that is not the case, period and of story. The trouble or misconception comes in when trying to get a vechile in the US that is from another country. The safety tests (crash tests) and certifications are done on left hand drvie vechiles that are sold in the US, the US Fed clearly states that they do not see that test done on a left hand drive would be the same as right hand drive vehicles therfore the RI's have a harder time passing the Fed saftey rating to allow right hand drive into the country. Further more to even get the test done even if you are willing to pay for it is a lot of work and usually hard to get them done. Some of the manufactures have provided the magic letter that is says it conforms but no one has seen one of these letters from Toyota regarding a Land Cruisers.

Ok here is some interesting information for you, I spoke to a person from an RI and he told me that he has personally seen a letter from Toyota regarding a car, so maybe Toyota does issue the letter they just do not want to do it for Land Crusiers, or maybe for some reason they know they do not conform.

Well there my bit if "urban legend" for today.

Cheers,

Michael

just curious as to what the seller said to you that sent up red flags?

I am not one to start bad mouthing anyone on here, especially since this guy is not on here. I will not get into specifics, but I will say I just did feel comfortable buying the truck.

I really think the Cruiser would cross the border and go through customs without a problem. I think for someone who wanted one that they could get tags for and not have any issues, this was the truck. As far as how many loop holes and would they all hold up in every state that is another story. Do I think this was the way to bring them into the US as a business, No Way.

Looking at the prices of 7x series in the US over the last six months this Cruiser was under priced for what you get (providing it was as stated). Lets compare 70 series prices to the 74 series. One cruiser that is an 85' that has had the body work done is listed at 22k without turbo (I little high without a turbo, but I would say around 17k is more in line) that gets you an 85' without AC or power windows or locks, and IDI injection and no turbo. Not to mention zero rust on the 74 and lower miles. I have several and my 86' has turbo 35" and a little rust here and there, I have been offered over 20 for the cruiser, and again that 74 is nicer. Oh yeah I almost forgot the top comes off as well.

Now if you can still find a nice JDM BJ74 you can probably get it for less than 19k but you still have to get it here, and the 74 looked like it had that issue taken car of.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers,

Michael
