U.S. Forest Service proposes recreation fee changes on the Uwharrie National Forest

Asheville, NC - April 22, 2019 - The U.S. Forest Service is proposing to change recreation fees at three areas on the Uwharrie National Forest and has opened an official comment period from April 22 to May 31, 2019.

The goal of the changes is to establish a consistent fee approach for the National Forests in North Carolina and to improve visitor experiences through site upgrades paid for by the collected fees.

Current prices at many forest sites have remained static for over a decade and have not kept pace with other recreation sites with similar services and amenities. In addition, many sites have received various improvements and upgrades.

"Collections from fees stay at the local level to pay for future and backlog maintenance and improvements on existing trails as well as new recreation opportunities. Increased fees will help us to meet our goal of providing safe, well maintained and sustainable recreation for the public to enjoy." said Michael Spisak, District Ranger on the Uwharrie Ranger District.

These fee changes are only proposed. After public comments are received, the Forest will assess the comments and concerns and then present the fee proposals to the Southern Region Recreation Resource Advisory Committee (RRAC).

The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act of 2004 allows the Forest Service to keep 80-95 percent of fees collected to operate, maintain, and improve the recreation sites.

The proposed fee changes are:

Campgrounds

Yates Place Camp - new $10 per night fee*

*As proposed, this fee would be implemented after site improvements are complete.

Day Use Areas

Kings Mountain Point - new $5 per vehicle fee or $30 annual pass**

**Fee is waived for visitors that have paid for a campsite at any of the Uwharrie campgrounds during their duration of stay.

Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Trails

Badin Lake OHV Trail Complex - increase from $5 to $15 per vehicle per day, and $30 to $60 annual pass***

***As proposed, these fees will be phased-in over a two year period.

Personally they should be higher for day use of the trails. And if you don't have the pass the fine should be at least $500.

And is this a pulled out of the air number for all of them or did someone do some homework?

It is ok to lose some customers, companies do it every day.

it was brought up in the user group meetings a few years ago and everyone was on board that rate increases needed to happen to help support Uwharrie, these numbers are a little higher then we suggested but, it is acceptable as there is practically no budget for improvements at Uwharrie. The increased fees will allow for some needed improvements to happen. The best source for funds has and will be funds received from matching dollars for volunteer work hours. if you just made it to 3 work days a year the URE ranger office would receive about $500 in funds to use that would not have otherwise been available. plus the fresh air and exercise are most therapeutic.

@fourtrax u just gave us the why. I had know idea about the money. Thank you so much.

^^ Maybe you should run for a USFS, or FOU position to help them with their decision making, or come out to a club event to use the forest :flipoff2:

Fee increase is a lot, but it's a good idea. Looking forward to what they do with the money. Have been hearing about a new trail opening in the park for a few years. With this fee increase maybe it'll actually happen.

Negative. If you are found there without a pass your vehicle is impounded for 30 days, if you are found outside of a trail your vehicle is crushed.

That's was what CA did to curb illegal street racing in the early 00s with the rice rocket craze (stupid hondas). It wasnt just if you were street racing it was if you were caught out there watching it also.

Everyone thought they were having a laugh untill the crushing started happening. Put the skids on large meet ups almost over night.

Like this even better.

Maybe I will.

I use the forest, I pay all taxes required, I leave the forest better than I found it.

I say they give out $500 tickets to drunk mouth breathers and crush their POS Ford Ranger. Don't ask me for more money.

I vote to charge the horse riders $2.00/day or a season pass fee. They really have it made with free access except Cane Brake. And I’ve heard they still come use the facilities without paying. Didn’t they have the clout to get bridge after Shadowlands installed super fast? Money talks...
Should we move this to rant? Lol

Yeah I agree with that. If you're going to increase fees for some that use the facilities, you should charge all that use them. I hike, mountain bike, and kayak various areas and everyone leaves a footprint somehow!

and who inforces this? the imaginary rangers on the trails?

Whatever happened to the side by side for them? I remember it was taken away since the govt cant except donations or whatever the deal was

Would you mind forming a complete senteance, please? :flipoff2::flipoff2:
Well i'm not going to say I didn't deserve that.

Does this mean meatball passed his 7th grade final exam finally?? :flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2:
