So lucky and I recognized it as it happened! I've never had it just slide out like that before. Usually it's the nightmare you described.
Right... I was watching the video and little yelling at the monitor NO ****ING WAY!!! WTF IS THIS BLACK MAGIC!!!
Sure my neighbors were wondering WTF I was watching.

Bumping this. While under the truck removing my running board I noticed the boot is torn on mine. How do you determine off the ball joint is a candidate for rebooting vs replacement?

Play in the joint. There shouldn't be any up or down sloppiness. I have an extra boot kit if that's all you need.
Thank you that sounds pretty straightforward. Where are you located? I wouldn’t mind picking up a boot or two

Thank you for the tip on walking the ball joint out. Of I hadn’t read this thread I would have lost my mind trying to press out the bad BJ. I got the drivers side done just done have the gumption to do the passenger side today. Maybe tomorrow. Also got to donate blood to this tank when my tool slipped and grazed my right eyebrow.

pressing in I had to be creative with what I had to make it work.

Did you replace just the boot or the entire ball joint ? Im trying to just replace the boot and looking for a video or detailed write up on how to do just that...
1. Remove cotter pin from upper ball joint.
2. Remove nut from upper ball joint.
3. Separate upper ball joint from hub.
4. Remove old boot/clip.
5. Install new boot/clip with a couple squirts of grease.
6. Repeat steps 3, 2, 1 in reverse order.

Thanks very much. Seems pretty simple, should I be prepared for a struggle in separating the ball joint from the hub ? Any specific way to do it / tools needed ?
