I talked to a few of you guys at the last meet and recommended the Uniden 520 CB radio. I purchased the antenna and mount etc., but where can I find the CB? Radio Shack doesnt carry it, Wal-mart either, and I tried a couple truck stops out here in the west valley but came up empty-handed. I want to buy it within the next couple days so I have it finished before the Payette Draw run this weekend. Can someone please locate one or send me in the right direction?

Howdy! Most of the good CB shops have gone out of business over the last few years. You might try Fry's Electronics, or just go to <WWW.Uniden.com> and see what you find. I get spam from them all the time once I registered my radio a few years ago. John

Fry's Electronics has them. Last week Thursday there were probably half a dozen in stock. Not sure if Ham Radio Outlet sells CBs but I know they have killer antennas  'course you could always bootleg on the 2 meter band not that I'd condone that.

inkpot- you the man, I called up Fry's electrronics and they have 3 Uniden 520's. Picking it up tomorrow, they put one in will call for me. Whew! Never even thought to try there really. I called all over town, either out of stock, or back ordered. I seen they had them at WalcottCB, but I wasnt about to pay for 2 or 3 day air or overnite. Who would of thought a CB would be so hard to find? Whats up with Apollo Communications anyway? dont answer their phone so I even drove there because a lot of the places I was calling around too referred me there, and not open. I suppose I could of gotten it easier by ordering it on the internet, but I procrastinated thinking it would be easily found and and done, and I have to have one by Saturday because according to Mr. Tool I would be laughed at on a trail run without one. oh and Msahr, what exactly does bootleg off a 2M band mean? This will be my first CB or any type of radio. Thanks for the replys. See you guys on the trail this weekend. Over and out fellers.

Sorry just trying to be funny... 2M band means 2 meter band, ham radio. You are supposed to have a license to legally use it. If you are bootlegging, you are using it without a license. I have a handheld Yaesu 2M radio but I do not have a license, but I also have not used it either.

Nice thing about ham radio is it's FM rather than CB's AM, better range, better clarity, you can use all kinds of neat things like repeaters to boost your range tremendously, you can place phone calls over the internet with the proper hardware.

Speaking of the 2M band and licensing...
Anyone in central AZ interested in getting licensed? I'd like to.
I'll revisit this topic after I move, tho. This week and next are kinda hectic.

Yes I am. I have a study book

and would like to get licensed. Probably should start a new thread...

goin w/ the uniden 520 too

azrider-

I have no CB experience, so good to know that you're goin w/ the 520 too. I'm preparing for an off-road learning experience session in dec. at borrego springs, ca w/ the legendary bill burke, chris nelson & other MUD guys. they require a CB or FRS radio, so with feedback from other MUD peeps in other forums, I'll be pruchasing the 520 and wilson antenna this week. what type of antenna are you going with?

Yeah, I just asked a few guys at the cruiser club im in here in Phoenix and recommended the Uniden 520. It was hard to find, backordered everywhere, ended up finding one at Fry's Electronics. I went with the Firestik II antenna with the hood mount. I think it looks great and after reading for hours on the Firestik website I was sold in their knowledge and product. And it just happens that Firestik is based here in Phoenix so I just went down and got everything there. And since the 520 has a PA option I stopped at a local truck stop and picked up a PA horn and mounted it behind my grille, just for fun. I have pictures if you want to see the install, just send me a PM with your email address.

That PA is not long for this world if you keep using it.:hhmm::eek::flipoff2:

I put it in for 2 reasons, YOU and KEVIN. It might come in handy when hearing loss becomes a problem for the old dudes. :)
