I'm looking at a vehicle right now and it has its undercarriage coated. The seller claims that the coating is to prevent rust but it looks like they may have painted over some rust also. Is there a way to tell for sure if the owner is being sneaky about this or they legitimately did this before any rust occurred?

Maybe the photos tell a better story.

bummer this got no response here because I need to know, don't have privileges to post in the general forum sadly.

Whether or not it currently covers any rust you would have to poke at it with an ice pick or similar in any area of concern.

If applied poorly it will develop rust and eventually blister the coating. By then it will be too late.

Unfortunately the car is another state so I would have to go there just to pick at some rust. The areas where the coating looks thick in the photos sketch me out because I can't really imagine what else that could be, unless they painted over some dirt and grime. Which seems unlikely if someone's going to the length to apply coating.

What year truck , where is it now and where has it been, as in previous owners.

Looks pretty stellar to me. The exhaust is usually a good indicator. My 4Runner with 285 K just got a new exhaust because I hit something. So they last.

What coating ? Fluid film or Woolwax ? It doesn’t look undercoated.
