In response to the easy start thing: my starter gets mad at me if I don't hold it until the engine cranks ('00). And I should really throw away the waste of a plastic piece that Toyota designed to look like cup holders. Usually I use the spot beneath those cup holders as a hiding hole for various items.
My 04 has them but for a couple years the little button that holds it closed does not work so every time you open the upper lid, the cup holder part flips down in the way. I have to hold it up with my hand while I get stuff out of the area below it. Anyone have this happen and know how to fix it? Nothing seems to be broken off, just the button catch does not seem to meet the little notch on the inside lid.

Could be that the hinges are bent. Back seat passengers putting their feet on the rear edge of the lid....
same on our 06 when we bought it this fall. there are 4 screws that hold the actual armrest to the console. remove those, then there are 2 screws that hold the cupholder assembly to the 'arms' (will make sense when you do it. then there are 2 pins that you will need a small flat head or a pin punch that is actually smaller than the pins (have to approach at an angle) to push them to where you can grab them with pliers.
saved it JIC i ever want to re-install. don't see that happening, but if i ever sell, i keep all OEM parts i remove. just habit.
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but does anyone have a part number for this under arm cup holder mechanism / tray? I can't find it anywhere and the locking mechanism on my 2001 Land Cruiser broke and it's driving me bananas!
