Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel - Problem in 1HZ??

But I guess the truckers said that off-highway diesel is dyed red so truckers can get flagged for using off-highway diesel if they add ATF, never heard any problem of other people using it.
 
There is still confusion between ULSD and LSD in some minds.

Low Sulfur Diesel has been around in the US market for a few years and about 10 years in Canada and Europe. Less than 500ppm sulfur. It caused problems with some engines because it lacked sufficient lubricity for some IPs. Lots of diferent addditives could restore the lubricity to that of old #2 diesel.

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel is only now coming to the US market, it's required to have lubricity additives so it's as slippery as the old #2 diesel at the pump.
Less than 15ppm sulfur, so it burns a lot cleaner.
Lubricity Additives not required.

Mr. Galt is correct, but if you read the article from Chevron quoted early in the thread, you will see there are some issues with the ULSD fuel shrinking the seals. That seems to be the problem I had.
The seal was hard from 15 years of being in a hot injection pump, when the ULSD fuels start to work on them, they shrink up causing leaks. It does not seem to be a lubricity problem.

BTW, been several weeks and she seems to be running fine!
 
Here are some quotes from the Chevron article incase you dont want to read the whole thing (I would suggest you do!!)

expected to be nitrile rubber (Buna N)
seals that have seen long service at high

tendency to accelerate seal aging. The
reduction in sulfur content is not
responsible for the problem."
 
Well, my HJ60 just got it's first taste of the new ultra-low sulfur fuel (back east in CT).

How many others on the list have been using this fuel for awhile?

Any adverse effects or just the 1 injector pump on the 1HZ.
 
I've been using for few months now in an old Mercedes. No faults yet. But it is clean looking fuel when you pour it in. Almost water colour. Instead of the straw coloured LSD.

Hey if its less pollution, gets better diesel technology here, I wll gladly replace seals if need be. Just make sure if you replace the orings you use a better kind. Not the same old style ones. Hate to the job twice.
 
ATF was used for years by the truckers when they went to low sulfer diesel. Not ULSD.

I would not put ATF in my fuel. period. It has cleaning properties that is going to bring a lot of stuck contaminates loose in the fuel. Just buy a proper diesel conditioner. I keep a jug in the trunk.

I like my biogrowth in the tank to stay put.

if aromatic chemicals are in the fuel that cause seal damage then adding atf isn't going to reduce that effect.

And as you mentioned what exactly does burning atf do to the environment
