I have an ugly ass sunspot that runs down the center of my hood. I'm thinking about just painting the center of the hood black. My question is how would I go about doing it? I assume I can't just paint over the spot without any primer or prepping. I know a few people on this board have had the center of the hood painted a flat black which is what I"m looking to do.

Thanks,
Nick

If I were going to do it I would probobly scuff sand the area to be painted, tack it off and just mask and spray.

I have a similar problem. Any suggestion for a color to use with an emerald green truck? I think black looks cool on the white but don't know how it would look on the green.

I think the black would look cool with pretty much any color paint. Not really sure what a "sun spot" is, but if it just peeling or messed up clear coat you could sand the clear coat off and just leave the factory color dull in that area.

I have some rubbing compound that I was going to try to clean it up with. Could you respray just a clear coat?

Scuff sand...then just paint it?

Same spots on the hood and roof of my grey 94, the clear coat is breaking down. I've been meaning to stop by a body shop and find out how much just to get the whole hood painted the oem color. I'm not really ready yet to redneck up the hood with black. The roof however seems like a good place for rhino black.

Nyk438, I did this on my FJ62 about 8 years ago to cut down on the glare from the roof-mounted lights. I'm here in Austin if you want to take a look at it, mine's held up *really well*, although the rest of the truck is starting to look like crap. I used Rustoleum Satin Black instead of just flat, to prevent stains from mud (flat is too porous), masked the truck carefully, scuffed the paint lightly with steel wool.

When I painted my entire truck I used a power sander and some medium grit paper. Then wash the area REALLY WELL, spray your satin or flat black on the masked area and let it dry.

It's not really too tough, and is a fun project.

What you are describing is failed clear-coat. painting over that is a short term fix. The "base" for the new paint will be un-stable. The correct procedure would be to remove the failed paint first.

Nick,

I have a emerald green 94 with the same sunspotting problem down the center of the hood. Have you checked up top behind the sunroof? Its really bad there on mine. I was thinking to paint the center of the hood black too. CDan has a good point as well local paint shops, its needs to be taken all the way down and built back up. A local paint shop wants $250 to repaint the hood with OEM paint and clear coat. Decide not to paint he fenders to "blend" in. Just havent taken it in yet.
Good luck with what you end up doing.

Yup I got it on the roof too. I'm not too caring about that right away it's just that the truck looks good minus the scratches but then theres the damn sun spot that runs down the center of the hood...almost forms an "H". I assume I have to sand it down like CDan said so that the paint has something to adhere to, anyone know how long this proejcect would take if I just painted the middle black?

Exiled--Definatley would like to see how it held up and if you wouldn't mind giving me some pointers on how to do it. I have very little expirience with painting and the expirience I have has nothing to do with painting a car. I'll send you a PM.

"$250" doesn't sound bad. Wonder how it would look without blending the fenders? Any paint experts?
