1. Scrape/brush off the loose rust/paint. Treat it with phosphoric acid (Jasco metal prep, available at Lowes). Touch up the paint.

2. Why plug it? Is there an extra hole there? There should be two hoses going through there.

I don't want fumes, etc... entering the cabin.

A PO removed the original carb and the current one does not have the fuel return line. It is capped at the tank... Thus only one hose. I think.

Thanks.

Ah. Well, that certainly isn't the only hole into the cab. If it concerns you, though, clean the rubber grommet really well and put a piece of black vinyl tape over it. Or use some weatherstrip adhesive to glue a circle of rubber over the hole. If you go to a stock carb in the future, you can just remove the patch.

I'm new to this site. A good friend of mine is helping me to pick my own FJ40. Your story is great.

Turd is a little strong for a name. Good luck and keep posting.

My 12 year old daughter has taken to calling her "Uglina".

What was the asking price of the 40? I'm just curious as to the market for clean 40's, not Ebay market, but real-world market.

Sweet find, great job tackling all those leaks up-front. I'd be still driving it and just park it out on the street to keep the drive clean...

Nice Rig

The photo of the engine compartment does not jive with my Fed spec 78. The line to your brake booster comes from the intake manifold and the port on your air cleaner goes to the valve cover.

Did some digging around on the oil cooler thing...

The thingy that the water hose goes into in the middle of this picture is called the waterhouse (according to SOR).

124574961_7220499836.jpg

The waterhouse top comes in two versions:

054-16B TOP WATERHOUSE-1968-1/79 NO OIL COOLER
054-16C TOP WATERHOUSE-8/76-1/79 W/OIL COOLER

So clearly Toyota made some rigs with an oil cooler and some without. I am guessing it was an option.

FWIW, This diagram shows the components that make up the oil cooler. And this page shows that there are two different oil filter assemblies (one for oil cooler equipped rigs and one for not).
The oil cooler was not an option on 78 model year. I do not think it came with one on FED spec non CA, non high altitude 40s. At least that is what the parts department at Desert Toyota told me.

Powder Coat Porn

Got all my steering and misc components back from the powder coater last week. Finally got a chance to take some pics of them and get to work on the rig.

I had planned on stripping and painting all this stuff myself but time has been so tight that I decided the expense was worth it. I'm really glad I made that decision...progress!

I also got my rear heater back from Shane (AATLASX). He did a fantastic job restoring it! It will be, by far, the nicest looking component in my interior when i get it installed. The dude does great work.

lastly, I was able to pick up my 3.73 3rd members from NW Differentials. These diffs came from an unknown '79 rig and were in questionable condition. The casings were covered in surface rust and even I could tell the pre-loads were off. The front one was probably OK, but I decided to have them replace the bearings in both. They also media blasted and painted them for me.

Enjoy the porn while I get this damn oil pan installed...

But I have always had one and for the past 20 years I have some rare low mile late model 40's and then I had a wild hair and was in the right place at the right time when I found a Red 79 CCOT FJ40 and I bought it! I thought I had the one!

Are you the person that bought CCOT cruiser that had some really low stock miles on it, I was talking to the guys there early this summer while I was in Dallas and saw a poster with a red one just like that which they told me had really low stock miles onit...

I think they told me the guy was a VP of some big company

Just curious

I am glad to see you went with matte black for the finish. I did gloss and it must be handled with care to prevent scratches. They all look perfect!

Nope, I have see pics of the one you speak of. Much nicer than mine was by far.......CCOT can do a resto on two seperate rigs and both will be differant on quality.

Wow, actual, real progres made on the rig today. I mean parts actually went back on!

I got my Tuffy box, seats, and newly restored rear heater in. The PO had installed a sub-woofer and it was a tight fit with the old heater. With the new one, it wouldn't fit at all. So I had to refrabricate the mount for the amp under the seat..

Then the tuffy box is a really tight fit between the seats. It took a bit of wrangling to get all the bolts to line up nicely again.

I had some help though... (10 year old son)

Whew!

That inside looks soooooooooo sweet!

Do you have the plastic cover for the sending unit? I might have one around someplace.

Is that Console the 024 model? it looks HUGE in depth that is. How does your elbow and arm rest on it?

Also be careful if you remove the clips off the heater cover. They are new and come off at a high rate of speed. Push thumb in the center of clip while pulling the tab end away from lower bracket and this will relieve tension. (if you need to center top) But it looks good!

Que es "sending unit"?

You know I'm not sure. I'll look at the docs that came with it. It is much bigger than I thought it would be, but it seemed pretty comfortable when I did my imaginary test drive after getting the seats installed. I was imagining how tight my steering would feel once I get it all re-assembled ;)

Yup, I disovered that (a) i needed to adjust it and (b) those clips fly off at a great rate of speed. Thanks again for doing such a nice job on it!

That is one clean crusier.

Thanks. It looks far better in pictures (and at 10-15 feet) than it does up close an personal. But it really is in great shape.

Under the passenger seat is a cover for the tank. Front right is a hole about 4" in dia, this is the cover I speak of.................
