Are sure that isn't a FJ60 tuffy console?

Also when do you want me to glue that captive nut on to the battery tray?

Yes, I'm sure. The mounting brackets fit like a glove.

I'll be gone this weekend, so maybe you could come over the week after the 4th? I'd appreciate your help getting my hubs back together....

More progress! Finally!

I *finally* got my oil pan re-installed. I was in serious procrastinate mode with it... for some reason I was really relucatant to just dive in and get the damn thing up there. First I dawdled until my local Toy dealer had FPIG in stock.

Then I had to find some studs and grind slots in the heads to make it easier to guide the pan into place.

Then I finally just did it. Next time it will take me about an hour. This time it took me several months. :o

I also got my "new" rear 3.73 3rd member installed. I ran out of time to put the rear axle but that should go quick.

Next up is getting the front 3rd in place and to start re-assembling my front hubs.

I have just purchased a 78 as well. On my dash there are two holes cut out on either end. from looking t at your pics looks like there are blowers which i assume are derost vents. Was this stock on the 78? or was it a factory option?? I am having a hard time trying to locate the vents, any suggestions??

I believe they are stock. Might check with cruiserdan to see if Toyota still stocks them.

My dash is a 78' with factory defrost tubes installed, I see them occasionally on Evilbay, look all about the used venders and ask Mark at Marks offroad he may be able to help you. good luck, you truck is a beauty. A fine piece of history your lucky to share the fun of a project like this with your young son, what a great bonding experience, trust me he will remember these days fondly for the rest of his life; I know I did with my Dad. Take Care KC

  1. The hole in the floor where the gas line goes...what should I plug that with? (Last picture).
If you feel the need to plug it and it has no use, try using a rubber grommet seal like there is in the floor pan and door sill at various points. You should be able to track down something the right size and look. If it looks like the ones that are already there it will pass as stock and only an ubercrusiergeek will be able to tell the difference. (thats only about half the ppl here on mud!)

Nice rig by the way:)

My 8/78 does not have them. I'm not sure when Toyota started shipping cruisers with the added side window defrosters. I do not think they were optional, but I could be wrong.

More progress...

  • New rag joint installed and power steering box re-mounted. Steering rod & wheel secured (PO had installed the bracket holding the rod backwards. sheesh).
  • Got the rear axles and the rear diff cover on. Just need to put some diff oil in (what weight do people recommend for a daily driver?)
  • Bull came over with his portable welder and gave me a quick lesson on how to weld. *I* then welded a nut onto my battery tray bracket that I had ground off due to a broken bolt. Fun stuff. I gotta get some schooling on welding.
  • Pulled the birf joints apart so I can re-pack the bearings. Like an idiot I didn't realize there were snap clips holding them together. It took Bull's intellect to point this out. We ended up breaking the inner C clips..new ones on order.

the steering shaft looks like it's touching the bracket at 5 o'clock . Is the box bolted in place? Does the shaft touch while you turn the steering wheel?

it's darn close, but does not actually touch. the rod has very little play in it and even when I try I can't really get it to "grind", so I think it's ok.

I can't remember, but can you loosen the 4 bolts at the fire wall and slide it over a hair to get a little more clearance? Im thinking while turning you might get a vibration.

Is the a 40 box? So you shortened the shaft in the middle by 1 and 1/4 inches?

I may slide it over a bit as you say. Thanks.

The PS box, PS pump, PS pump bracket, and PS lines are all from an unknown source. They were installed (i am assuming) by CCOT in '94.

I put the box & shaft back in just as it was before I took it apart, with the exception of the new rag joint.

The box is NOT a FJ40 '79+ box (I know because I tried to replace it with one and they were not the same).

The pump is also a mystery. See https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?p=1173147. I also asked a bunch of FJ60 folks and they claim it is not a 60 pump either.

I am dead in the water with my steering system until I can ID this pump and find a replacement... I plan on having you refurb the tank ;)

Got the axles apart and removed the bearings and races. After cleaning them up I noticed that there's quite a bit of minor surface rust here and there on all parts. The FSM says "inspect for wear, damage and rusting". Well there's no wear or obvious damage, but there is rust.

WTF am I supposed to do?

1) Ignore it (the rust is minor, move on)?
2) See if I can dremmel the rust away?
3) Replace these parts?

My instincts tell me the rust is totally minor and can be ignored. If I had not read the FSM like a good boy that's just what I'd do...

Also: The FSM says the use "molybdenm disulphide lithium base grease" when re-assembling the axle shaft bearings & races.

I have some "MAG1 Hi-temp disc brake wheel bearing grease" that says it is "...state-of-the-art lithium complex grease."

Do I have the right stuff, or do I need to go hunt for something more specific?

You and that "dremel" Scotchbrite will be your friend. rust sopts wipe off with scotchbrite. Pitting with edges is bad.....

Send that cup and cap (seal removed) down to me. Posted up in your other P/S pump thread.

Teq- Greetings from Spokane, WA.

This is a great thread and a great landcruiser. This is my favorite color by far. Only Toyota picks mustard as a color that turns out to be popular. I have a white FJ40 and I much prefer mustard and brown to white. Seems so retro.

I am curious about your thoughts of your AC system? Are you pleased with it? I think it looks great, but I was wondering if you think it works well? It has been hot in the PAC NW this last month.

I have a 1979 and I am trying to decide on AC or not. I think yours is the vintage air system.

thanks
