I need someone to volunteer to offer some assistance to a brand new UC member. Rick (Landtank) is from Boston and drove all the way down to Cullowhee with his son to wheel w/ UC this weekend. Unfortunately he has some brake problems on his 80 and is awaiting a Toyota dealership to open on Monday so he can order parts. He is currently (basically) without brakes and needs somewhere where he can work on his 80. Can someone offer up their garage? Rick has to get this fixed before he drives back to Boston.

Thanks!

Can someone PM me ricks #? ive got a couple calls out, awaiting response.

thanks for this post Steve. I need an ABS actuator and through car-part.com have located a few within 70 miles of Asheville. Right now I'm hoping to be able to get one of these used units tomorrow and get it installed to start the drive home.

there seems to be a few places in Grover NC with them and if someone was around there it would help with the amount of driving I would have to do in the current situation.

I'll PM you my number Jason.

Rick,

I live near Asheville and you are welcome to use my garage, floor jack, air tools, etc. I don't know what an ABS actuator is, but if I can help, let me know.

David Davis (camped next to you friday).
Also, I have a good friend in Asheville who owns Mostly Toyotas, an independent toyota garage. Lots of knowledge and nice guys.

Hey Rick.... just saw where grover is and my friends in asheville wouldnt have been able to offer much in the way of a garage or tools, but you are now half way to my house (bout 2-2.5 away) and you are welcome to come here (straight up 85 to greensboro), and if there are no showings scheduled possibly my parents place. Im gonna post up on the north carolina site for help around charlotte, and ill add the link here. Cruiser4life is in clt and wheeled w/ us this weekend.

Rick - As Jason mentioned above, I live in CLT and can assist if needed.

I met you during the weekend when you were working on John's 80 between the balds. I gave your son a ride back down to the lower bald and eventually figured out I had my FSM under a pile of gear in my 80...

Anyway, I am 30 miles from Grover. As the Upstate Cruisers mantra goes, what's mine is yours - space to work as long as you need it, tools (what I don't have we can go snag from my service manager at Toyota (5 minutes away)), help with transportation, lodging / food, etc.

Bottom line - 30 miles / minutes away I can offer any support you need. Just let me know how I can help.

I am in a'vill and you are welcome to the driveway....can't even fit my cruiser in the garage!

Rick is on the way to Andy's - a BIG thanks to Andy for the assistance. Last I spoke w/ Rick he was at a parts yard and an ABS actuator was being pulled for him. Hopefully he will be able to get it installed and get back on the road soon.

That's for all the offers and right now the truck is at a dealer recommended by Andy. Between what I bought nad what I swapped from Andy's truck I have no idea what is left or wrong with this thing. I talked with the tech and he'll be running some diagnostics in the morning and hopefully have the answer and parts if needed to fix the truck.

I'm interested in what's wrong as this is the first non warranty work I've had a dealer do in like 15 years and the first brake down in as many.

FWIW a lot of 80s have been having a soft pedal issue and this is probably that problem to the extreme.

If you guys ever have issues in Cullowhee and need a place to wrench- just let me know- I am glad to share my dirt driveway.

Rick is on the road!

I just spoke with Rick and he is on the road! He is trying to knock some miles out of the way and will post up later tonight.

Thanks to everyone who helped out!

Well I'm in CT and the brakes aren't worth crap again. I picked up the truck and the pedal was perfect in every way. Drove up to Roanoke VA where we grabbed some lunch and everything was still great. Filled up with gas and drove on. Drove another 280 miles without as much as touching the brakes and the first press went to the floor. WTF?

The good thing is that I'm past all the BS and have only 1 city left to negotiate traffic and I'm home.

thanks everyone for all the support and help with this problem and helping me get my son home safely :beer::beer:

Well, its good to hear you are on your way and almost there; sorry bout the continuing problems. It was great meeting you and only for the love of mud would one understand such a journey for a lil romp in the woods, but glad you guys came through. Hopefully the wifey will let you take Michael away again in school time, or should i hope that he will still want to go next time ? :hhmm: You guys are already welcome anytime and hopefully we might meet on your turf soon...............either way will have the rotel to match your corn beef hash :D

If bleeding them cures it temporay, it sure seems like you have air getting in somewhere. Where could air be introduced without loosing much fluid?

BTW I feel your pain, still trying to track my issue down.

Just got home and boy does that feel good. We had a great time and since Mike missed more school than planned he has some work to make up. I talked with him and said that if he wants any kind of chance of doing it again he'll have to get the work out with good grades or his mom will put a stop to it immediately. He anxiously got me going and is at school right now collecting his assignments. It will be interesting how he responds.

And the boy insisted on these
