I have had the pleasant task of tearing back into the old goat after replacing the water pump last season. After replacing all belts and hoses I opted for a napa idler pulley replacement bearing rather than replacing the whole assembly (cheap & stupid), and of course it has failed. Since I am back in there I have decided that I hate working on the front of the 3fe and I am looking forward to whacking the fan shroud in half and also like the idea of the Tefba coolant filter. It appears to be a more solid unit than the Gano, however I have searched to the best of my ability (computer challenged) & cannot find a distributor in the U.S. Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated. Also I'm trying to decide on the best method to neatly cut the shroud in half. I'm thinking a pair of tin snips would be a "hack job" and probably leave a very sharp edge and look like I used a can opener to do it. Thanks, Darren

Cutting the fan shroud is a must. Use a good hacksaw blade. Draw a line with a sharpie marker to follow.

Several people have used tefba filters on the 3FE and essentially never found any debris in the filter and later removed the tefba. I had one and never installed it, not necessary IMO.

Thanks for the info., I forgot to mention that I also replaced the radiator at the same time with a fairley pricey one. Engine has 200k miles on it which I'm unsure of the maintenence kept- then an additional 20 k since I took over. It had green colored anti freeze when I made the purchase and first thing was to flush the system which wasn't exactly clean, but not fouled either. I stayed with the green since I have heard mixed opinions on both red & green. Mainly just trying to do as much as I can to maintain this cooling system because as we know if I have to rip it all apart again there goes the A.C. charge & all the rest. Not sure what IH8 members experience with the different anti-freeze is but I would certainly like to get anyones opinions or experiences. Thanks, Darren

If you are careful you can work on the coolant system without loosing the A/C charge. I just finished pulling the motor out of my FJ62 without disconnecting the A/C as I wanted to recover the R12 in the system for another vehicle.

^^^Yep, absolutely no reason to have to discharge the A/C system. The receiver/drier unbolts from it's bracket, and the A/C hoses are plenty flexible to get it outta the way still connected.

Secondly, I split my fan shroud with a die grinder and a cut-off wheel.

Lastly, I've never even considered a coolant filter for any of my vehicles, especially for my cruiser. I do a flush about every 2-3 yrs and refill with quality green coolant and distilled water.

When I got my rig, it had old green coolant. I flushed it and went with Toyota Red. Within a few days, it started leaking from most every hose and the upper tank of the rad. I flushed it again and ran straight water with RedLine water wetter, for a few weeks until my new rad showed up. Once the red was out, the hose leaks stopped, and the upper tank leaked much less.

I installed the new rad a few days back, along with a gallon of Zerex Green and RL Water wetter. I also change the hoses last week.

Because the 62 has a Cast iron block and head, and uses a brass rad, I'll stick with the green stuff and call it good.:D
