I am making some new u-bolt plates and I am planning on using an old set of front shock towers to cut, trim, and weld onto the rear u-bolt plates to mount the shocks in the stock location. The only problem is I think the shock towers are cast iron. Can somebody verify this with their own experience? Thanks.

Get out your grinder. Whitish sparks=Steel, IIRC, Redish sparks =Cast iron.

Instead of doing all that cutting and grinding you could just weld a nice big bolt to the u-bolt plate...or use chevy u-bolt plates that already have the shock/swaybar? mount on them.
