My air filter box has a K&N sticker, I've been dreading what I'd find in there, but haven't had time to do much to my new old 4R. Last night I checked to find a clean Toyota Denso filter in there, goodbye sticker. But there's another filter looking thing just past the replaceable filter, looks stock, what is it?

If this is the V6, there is a screen in there just after the filter. I think the idea is that it's a spark arrestor screen in the event of fuel vapours traveling back up the intake (backfire?). Whatever it's purpose, it's supposed to be there and is non-replaceable without buying a new airbox assembly.

I found out it's a carbon filter for the EGR system. I have the FSM downloaded, can't find stuff like this in it. Or haven't looked enough maybe.

Ya. Many have just gone ahead and ripped that out. Many others have told the first many that they are idiots and are going to blow up and die. Some say it's worth it for the performance gains. I did it. I haven't blown up, and I don't go any faster than before. Before you let someone talk you into ripping it out, think about this post. :meh:

I left it in place, doesn't seem to hurt anything. Some day I'll want to spray throttle body cleaner down there, will have to figure out a way around the charcoal filter. I think there's a way to clean a charcoal filter, reactivate, I think it has to be heated. Probably not an option for the plastic frame.

I i think you are supposed to stick it in the oven, but as you said, I'm not sure that plastic thing would hold up too well.

I ripped open the similar looking charcoal filter element in my son's aquarium, and put in fresh activated charcoal. It's not rocket science, but I'll leave it alone for now. I don't need charcoal dust in my intake.
