I'm on my way to go pay for this little beastie to replace by Oldsmobile.
About two weeks ago, the transaxle in my car dropped into first gear (from third) while I was doing 45 and accelerating onto 101, I thought the engine was going to drop onto the roadbed.

I found this little pickup for about 800 in RP, 1979 20R Hilux, SR5 model (according to seller). Needs some work, but runs and drives, and is a start.
I've got some plans for it, Can-back, custom bumpers, roll-bar in bed, but nothing as extensive as a rebuild, just duct tape as needed, so to speak.

now I can actually participate in events instead of just showing up and being awkward.

I still have my cruiser, so I'm not all Darkside, maybe grey-side? The truck'll be gone after I'm done on the cruiser.
There are worse things to own, *cough cough* heeps *cough*.

:) You all will be assimilated into the flock!

Can't wait to see the buildup. *FWIW I've some free days if you want an extra pair of hands from the 510.

I'm sad to say this purchase isn't happening. The guy selling it doesn't have title, nor does it conform to smog, so it can't legally be sold in the State o' California. He was trying to pull a fast one on me, I would've loved to own it, too.

Plan B is just horde my cash until I either find one from a reputable seller (IE Yodaman, or someone at least holding title.) or just save up until I have enough cash to take my cruiser to Mudrak and ask him to work his magic on it.
I knew this seemed too good to be true. Just take it from the hand of God, it wasn't meant to be.

ya, keep looking. I think you can get a whole lot more truck for a little bit more money.

Sometimes missing out on a deal leads to an even better deal. Think positive. :)

I've been haunting Larry's shop on a near weekly basis. For now I'll save up and keep my fingers crossed.

The problem with buying any used Toyota pickup seems to be their naturally high resale value, plus most sellers seem to have this overinflated price slapped on it.
One I saw was an 86, total showboat with some great:rolleyes: mods, about 300 thousand miles and a knock to boot for like nearly 6 grand. It's ridiculous how much people think they can squeeze out of these things.

It said all that in his ad on CL. What were you expecting?
It says it in his ad now, after I called him on it.
When I first looked at it, he said everything's in order, needed some work, but he held title.

I should have backed out when I asked if he'd let me bring Yodaman in to look it over, or when I asked if I could write down the VIN and run it through the DMV.

Found another reasonable one I'll look at Wednesday. Wish me luck.

I've got a buddy in Concord with a 1991 extra cab 4x4/5 speed/3.0 he is looking to sell. Motor has had the HG recall work done by Toyota, mileage is around 200k, IIRC. Not sure if its what youre looking for. I think he's looking to get around $2500 for it. I can put you in touch if you are interested.

Tempting, however, I don't have much in the way of cash. I do love the early 90's body style.
I'm looking at an '82 22R in Napa. Just got back from looking it over.

I'm working a sale over now for this little 1982 Hilux right now.
3 year old motor, and transmission with about 100,000 miles on 'em, new carb (you could eat off it, it's that clean). 22R, 4 speed, chevy springs in rear, SOA, 60-series PS gearbox, double shackles, welded rear diff, bobbed bed, (apparently) 4X4labs steering. Runs smooth, shifts clean, good shape overall.

My plans are still about the same, custom bumpers, some paint, can-back (If it works with the bobbed bed) maybe fab up my own bed later on down the road.
It will be more my DD than anything, so I may swap out the third for a non-welded one, and if they cause trouble, maybe lose the z-style shackles, too, but for now I'll run it as-is and just have fun.

FWIW, depending on how much bed has been bobbed off, you can do this type of setup to mount under the can-back, for that matter, even with a bobbed bed, you could make it work and just have the can-back tailored to fit. Want to buy a good Signer I have sitting here? ;)

**Market prices have come way down b/c of the economy, you're just shopping in the wrong market area, have you given any thought of going down to Yodaman? If "Yeah!", let me know and I'll tag along for kicks. I'm free most of the hours when I'm not job scouting or interviewing..

The bed's been bobbed 13 inches, it was a longbed, so that may just put it at 6', I'll pack along a tape measure on Monday when I go back.

I actually haven't, looked very far elsewhere. I've just always had this fear lurking in the back of my mind that my car would explode if it left the county (which it's pretty much done a couple times). In fact, I haven't even heard of Toy Connection, I've mostly just been haunting the Craigslist scene, or pestering Larry at Yodaman.

In retrospect, I'm not at all surprised that Sonoma County's the wrong market area to car-hunt in, it's the wrong market area to buy anything in. If this truck doesn't pan out, I wouldn't mind looking around.

Sam, IMO that is am excellent rig. If it is a runner then you are set. Focus your efforts on compiling spares, camping gear, etc. Most of your spares will transfer over to 40, winch will bolt to either vehicle, I say a little outfitting and that is a primo thrash wheeler. Your stoked, see you at Pilsbury.

Bully! thanks!
it is a runing rig, it has three needs as-is:

-it was getting some aftermarket gauges, has a tach, Oil pressure, and Temp, but needs a speedo (they're those cheap equus ones from most auto parts stores, easy find)
-it doesn't have shocks. I grew up with an 87 s-10 that ate shocks for breakfast, so I could survive waiting.
-It seems to blow oil out from around the EGR gasket. This worries me some, I don't think the EGR should have oil running through it. It may be a bad seal on the timing cover, which is close by, and is a common source of leaks, or a hole in a nearby hose. it runs as-is, and when I have the cash, I'll drop it by Yodaman for a look.

Oh, yeah, it needs the front drive shaft lengthened to accommodate the lift.

Thanks to everyone for the support! I really do hope to make it to Pilsbury.
