Hmm. Puzzler here. My new'ly turbo'd HJ-60 is exhibiting an erratic stall on deaccelaration. Here's the presentation of symptoms - hopefully somone can advise on an Rx:

- the block is a non-EDIC 2H - key difference here is that the fuel shut-off operates on vacuum, not via the EDIC.

- the turbo is AIT branded, but is a Garrett or Garrett type.

- startup, operation seems normal. Max boost is about 4-6 psi around town.

- where things get strange is when deaccellerating. If I don't apply the clutch, no worries. however, if for example I'm slowing to turn left and switching from 4-3, I get a near stall when the clutch is applied--there is a definite hesitation, RPMs drop below 500, and then come back up when the clutch is let out.

- this behaviour is intermittent. Sometimes (esp at lower speeds <30K) it doesn't show up at all. It's most evident when I'm slowing from 60K to <30K.

Any thoughts?

some questions:
is your idle speed normal, around 650 rpm?

if you rev up the engine to 3000rpm and then quickly get off the accelerator, what happens?

if you go to the throttle body, and manually try to close it more than it is at idle speed, can you do that? and do rpms drop a bit then?

Might be a loose cable

Jan -

idle speed is a solid 700. Reving to 3000 and then dropping the throttle manually from inside the engine compartment reveals a loose throttle cable. Tightening up that bad boy seems to do the trick at least in the driveway....I'll try some around town tomorrow and see what happens.

I had this Prob when I first got my 61 I remedied this buy bumping up idle speed to 700rpm's

700 rpm and tight cables does the trick

Ok, just to close the loop here...700 rmp and a tight throttle cable makes all the difference.

Just took put the new block through its paces - the 2200 km drive from Labrador to Ottawa, including some impressive hill climbs in the Laurentians on the Cote Nord.

Man, what a difference a turbo makes to the old 2H! Nice not to have to downshift or get in behind the fully loaded transports for a long ride up.

I burned about 1/2 l of oil - is that within 'spec?

I also unfortunately discovered that my EGT gauge is a dud - darn thing never moved off the post (300C).

In a month . ?

I never burn or loose ( need to replace ) oil in my 2H between oil changes .. I thought it's not normal ..

I use Castrol GTX viscus max 20W -50 here in Panamá.

figured out why the oil loss

I discovered where I was losing oil. Seems that the connector hose between the crankcase vent and the turbo intake (which I'm assuming is to equalize pressure?) developed a bit of a kink, causing oil to blow out the seal. Replacing the hose fixed the problem.

Took a 500k drive to and from Montreal today...perfect. No oil loss whatsover.

Did I mention how much nicer it is to drive a turbo'd HJ60? It's a completely different animal, even in Montreal traffic!
