blown head gasket
motor, with computer and wireing for 200.00.

had an auto behind it, did not get trans or transfer.

what do I need to watch for during the rebuild, other then the normal blown head gasket stuff?

will need larger injectors? or just increase the fuel pressure?
I plan on inter cooler and increasing the boost.

any recomendations on a type or style or brand of head gasket?

anyone make a soft copper gasket?

thanks. may build a snow run truck or put it in one of our trucks.

Ppl will tell you they eat HG's, but so do RE's with no or shoddy, cheap machine work...

So have the head checked out and use a Cometic HG.

Then there's the CT20... Just throw it away and get a CT26 or t3.

The CT26 is a bolt-on and IIRC the t3 will require an adapter... No biggie.

Oh, then there's the exhaust manni. Now I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure the cracking was because of the crappy CT20. So if it's not cracked and good, I'd roll with it.

"As time rolled by, Turbo Engineering Center (TEC). Of Magalia, California found that the life expectancy of the CT-20 was in the neighborhood of 60,000 miles. When it comes time to replace or repair these units, Toyota only offers a replacement turbo for $1850-no service or repairs. TEC traced the CT-20's short life span to the routing of the oil supply line. The line ran directly under the turbine housing and was joined to it. This allowed a great deal of heat transfer and TEC believes oil was ultimately restricted which led to turbo failure. Another shortcoming of the Toyota turbo was the backpressure it produced. TEC tested a CT-20 and found at 9 psi there was 22 psi of backpressure and high exhaust gas temperatures. The conditions were ripe for failure."

nice, where do I pick up a ct 26? whats it come out of?

I am a newbe to turbo motors.

if the ct 20 is still good should I run it untill it dies?

CT26 is used on the 7MGT-E Supra's. There is a thread on the RTE forums detailing the swap, but I'll have to find it... I guess they're still active? I sent in a request forever ago and have not heard back yet...

The jist is you have to elongate (waller) out some flange holes and it's a bolt on. But the devil is in the details... There is more to it than that.

On the 20... I wouldn't run it no longer than I had to...

Or, you might be looking for another exhaust manni...

These Turbo motors couldn't be any farther away in terms or reliability and durability than a good ol' 22RE. If you're expecting trouble free, I'd look elsewhere.

My junk, bucket-o-sh.. 84 4x4 with a 20/22R Hybrid might be getting a 7MGT...:D Depends how bored I get and how easy I come across an engine.

I did a bunch of looking into them and figured that for reliability I was better off not touching them. It looked like it was best to live with the lower output a standard 22RE would give at high elevations. To make it long term reliable looked like it required some mechanical mods or custom parts which I prefer to not have to do.

Personally I'd fix it up and sell it to some sucker who doesn't know better.
 
The turbo motors are lower compression and have less torque so they don't make good engines for a crawler. If its a daily driver or a desert pounder then your good.

Why, so you can change more headgaskets. There's a reason supra guys like to swap them out for 1jz's or 2jz's.


Ct-26's also came in turbo mr2's and celica gt4/all-tracs. Personally, I wouldn't touch a ct26 if going to a custom turbo. They run out of umpf after 15 psi and most likely they will be well used. Just get a small t3 or gt28, get them all day for cheap.

GT2860R it's a great turbo .. very capable, huge one, are you ready to run that kind of turbo .?
 
That t25 turbo I think is smaller than the one on there. So you shouldn't have to upgrade anything. Probably the only thing you will have to do is adapter for mounting and oil/coolant lines. My cousin is going to put one on his 4runner after he rebuilds the block he has. He is using a 22r block and going to run low boost, about 6psi.
