Hi, has any one fitted a turbo timer to a '98 100 series? i have a 2nd hand "Razo" timer and need to know which wires to connect to where. also how would this work with remote central locking and the transponder immobiliser in the key?

My question is why do you want to? The only purpose of a turbo timer is to cool down and keep the turbo bearings lubed after a car has been run hard. Realistically, even after running a turbocharged car hard, you don't need to idle it more than a minute, during which time the turbo will basically have stopped and cooled down.

i thought the turbo should be let to spool down for longer than that after a hard run. anyway, a minute is long enough to sit and wait when i can jump out and let the timer switch off for me after a pre set time.

Not necessarily to let it spool down, but to keep the oil flowing to it to remove the heat. If you run high boost and shut it down immediately it will still be spinning to some extent, but the main problem it the heat (from hard driving) and no oil will be going to the bearings.
I seen an electric oil pump in Turbo Magazine that I thought might be a better idea, Just put the turbo timer to it and the oil can be pumped and not waste any gas.

I have used the HKS turbo timer on my VR4 since ’91. I think it’s a must for turbo cars. On my ’92 vr4 I switched to the newer timer. I like it much better as it has an auto mode which it gets its reading form the ECU to determine how lonundefinedg it will idle. No more guess work. If I stay off the throttle it may only run for ~40 seconds or so, but when I pull off the highway and stop the unit will run for minute and a half or so. I think it will work with the transponder as the vehicle will already be running. Not 100% on this one though. I had an Alpine alarm with all sorts of sensors added to it & some of the sensors had to be put on a relay to only activate after the timer timed out. I know on both my cars the factory alarm was disabled when using the timer because the alarm never sees the doors lock and it thinks that no one has left the vehicle.

I run a BLITZ unit on my FZJ and I can definately say it give me peace of mind to know that oil is still going to the bearings after shut down. Not something I would want to be without and sometimes the system does require more than 1 minute to shut down so I would not consider that to be a rule to be applied.

thanks for the advise. IM still unsure as to weather the remote central locking will work as
DMX84 quite rightly said it wont know ive left the vehicle and wont work while the engine is running. Also, as this is a second hand unit, i have no idea where to connect the red, green , blue and black wires.

To echo reffug, I also have a turbo timer and consider it essential both for turbo longevity as well as personal peace of mind. His is more sophisticated in the sense that the turbo timer senses the temp then shuts down accordingly. On mine (HKS) it is simply preprogrammed to shut off at either 60 seconds 120 or 180 depending on where you want it. I leave mine set to sixty seconds for most driving but when going up mountain passes, or when working it hard I give it three minutes most of the time. Not sure how the 100 security system differs but on my 80 I can shut off the ignition, remove the key, remotely lock the doors and arm the security system and the engine will run as long as required and then shut down. The only thing that interferes with the security system is when my stereo is left on too loud; the bass makes the security system think that the vehicle is getting bumped so the horn chirps and causes commotion. The trick for that is just remembering to turn down the volume prior to parking!!!

thats what i hope will happen when i eventually connect my timer. mine is fairly basic as in i have to set the run on time. Did u install the timer yourself? is it a 4 wire connection, if so, where are they connected?

Just Cruisin’, I would try and get the information on your timer on-line. You will need to hook into the ignition (run) wire, going in & out of your timer. One wire will be ground; one will go to your parking brake. I would make sure before you hook into it. If you will give me all the information to your unit I can post it on the Turbo related performance sites I belong to. PM me your info.
