Turbo on an FJ40?

Anyone ever done it? Would it even make sense? I just finished putting a turbo on my BJ40, and I have my buddy's 77 FJ in my shop right now beefing up the body for him, and I was wondering if it was feasible to turbo or not. Mine made such a difference for me, I can only imagine what kind of horsepower boost a guy could get out of a 6 banger!

Oh, what boner material turbo and SBC....

Mace is the turbo man I believe, his posts and threads have alot of turbo (2F) information. I would review his material and he maybe helpful to contact if your have any further questions.

Funny thing being a gearhead. I went from having playboy and hustler under my bed and couch to having Summit, High PO Pontiac, TT's and Peterson's 4x4 under the bed and couch. My girlfriend thinks I've got high octane on the brain.

I didn't buy a kit - I did everything myself. I purchased a Garrett T28 turbo from a buddy of mine (came off of a Nissan SR20DET motor), had the turbo rebuilt, and then assembled all the bits myself. I had to make a custom exhaust flange because the orientation of the one that came with the turbo was way off, but other than that it all sort of bolted together. I purchased a 13BT exhaust manifold which has the mounting spot for the turbo, and I had to make an adapter plate there too, come to think of it. All in all it cost me $300 for the turbo, and about $1200 in parts, but I was trial and erroring, so I had stuff left over. The parts were silcone elbows, stainless steel piping, braided lines for oil and water cooling, guages, etc. The manifold alone was $500. I probably could have done it cheaper - some guys have flipped their stock exhaust manifold upside down and made an adapter plate for the turbo, used normal elbows and fittings with hose clamps etc - I just wanted to do it properly. As far as performance gain - its night and day. I am getting 10-15 psi boost (15 if I really keep my foot in it) and it has basically made my cruiser the same as every other car on the road. If the light turns green, I'm not holding anyone up. Having said that, its still just an 80 hp motor, so don't expect to be able to smoke the tires or pull a 10 second quarter or anything! It woke my truck up, and made it fun to drive. It maintains speed going up hills and doesn't hold up traffic. Well worth the money imo!!

You're talking about doing this on a gasser, right? I don't have any info but am interested in what info you find to see if I want to consider it.

It is a gasser, yes, however the project is off the table now as my buddy who owned the truck was killed in a car accident this past Christmas...
