This is my hzj79 extra cab build.

My ute started life out as a hzj79 ute with the rear cab modification completed when it first got brought over and landed in Australia by Toyota At the dealership.

The story goes that this ute was modified for an Australian mine contractor company, the extra cab made room for the surveyor’s equipment to be stored safely behind the seat.

I bought the my ute with 600,000km on it off of my mate who used it on his farm for most of its life, he bought it from the mine auctions with roughly 200,000kms.

After owning the ute for the last 6 months the slow, thirsty 1hz was starting to frustrate me, it used 18l/100km driving normal conditions, add a trailer or a load on the tray and it would climb to 21l/100km, not ideal especially considering it didn’t have any power to show for it.

Initially I just advanced the fuel pump timing a few degrees to see if it would give any improvement, overall the fuel economy stayed the same but I gained better low end throttle response.
Later I turned up the fuel screw and this yeilded better power over the whole rev range but yet fuel economy stayed the same surprisingly.

Next step add a turbo. My father in-law gave me his old factory VNT turbo

The VNT turbo was the standard Garret model from his VDJ79

Some steel flanges were made from paper templates, I braised up two oil feed adapters to suit, built a J pipe to fit the standard 1hz exhaust manifold to the new turbo, fabricated a stainless intake pipe and made an oil drain in the sump.

After many late night after work hours the setup was done and fully functional, some fuel pump tweeks were needed for ideal EGT temps and a modified waste gate actuator was fitted to the VNT to keep the mani pressure around 10 psi.

The trusty 1hz now has plenty of power and delivers 13L/100km with normal driving conditions.

Next mod will be some taller final gears for a lower highway rpm, hopefully the fuel economy can be improved more!
