I searched for this and didn't find much, other than a lot of buzz about that sweeeet new Tundra with a diesel!!!

Has anyone tried to transplant a Tundra engine or even engine/transmission into a 40? I'm guessing it would be crazy expensive, but if done right.... whoa.

For me this is simply a consideration as I won't be starting any engine swap for at least a year. My goals, however, are to install a very reliable powerplant with modern electronics. I've always said that if money were no obstacle, I'd just buy a new chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 and strip it of engine, trans, wiring, cats etc., and graft it into my cruiser.

But, if money really weren't an obstacle, why not the same operation with the new Tundra? A buddy just bought one and the tag in his window shows 385hp (sadly no tourque figures).

Anyway, anyone tried it? Opinions?

Thanks,

kyle

All I know is the more I work on modern engines and their modern electronics , the less I feel secure about running them in a place where no tow trucks travel. I'll stick with the TBI 350. Just enough electronics to run a fuel injection yet simple enough that you can carry a shoe box with spares enough to get you home. If for some silly reason I want to, I can do 110 on the highway and I average 17mpg highway, 14~15 around town.

Man, if money really were no object, I'd have to go with an ICON....just toured through the build area last week at TLC....and holy crap those are awesome! Expensive, but awesome..

You have to be kidding me.

Here I was thinking I knew what I wanted to do with this 40 I've had since '87.

Then you had to go and mention ICON. Of course I had to google it to find out what you were talking about....

Dear Lord: please let me win the mega millions. Not for all the reasons I prayed for before. Now I have a new purpose in life: to own and drive an ICON as it's meant to be driven. No Ferrari. No Lambo. There is nothing so sweet as my new dream of spending a full week with the owner of TLC describing every curve, every fitment, gearing... hell, I'll even pay extra for someone to take a pair of toenail clippers to remove each and every little piece of new tire little rubber thingy just to make a set of tires match up to this rolling piece of art.

WOW.

As far as I'm concerned, I would actually trust the newer/newest fuel injected engines more so than the earlier versions. They are even more dependable, more limp-home capable, even smoother running, even better milage, and just plain make a carburetor sitting on the side of a 45 degree hillside look like the lamest thing on the planet!!!

im glad that i am not the only person who thinks this way .

now if i could just find the cash .

As long as you get EVERYTHING:
engine
tranny
transfer
ENTIRE WIRING HARNESS, every single connector intact
ECM & TCM
engine and tranny mounts

I am working on a Tundra swap into an 80 for a buddy......sourced a rollover and taking the whole damn thing to make sure we have what we need to make it happen.

dude once 2012 comes and the electromagnetic solar flairs penetrate our failing magnetosphere all electronics will fail... go all natural

This is actually the part I was interested in; since I have no experience with anything of the sort.

The wiring harness: do you actually remove the whole thing from the donor truck, or do you graft sections of it out and piece it together in a 40 (80 in your case) configuration?

I say find a donor truck and go for it.

I just did a 1996 4.6L swap into a 56 Ford truck. Everyone said go out and buy a 1200+ dollar wiring harness as it takes forever to cobble the otherone together. But it was a cake walk. Just make sure you get the computer and all of the connectors and wiring harness. Cut out what you don't need when you are done

Use the same transmission and transfer case and then just adapt your driveshafts and I dont know about axles if they are centered and the same side drop.

Or even better take the whole truck shorten the frame, thow your FJ40 body on there.
