Hello,
I'm not a regular here in the truck section, but a coworker asked me a question that I had no answer to. I thought someone here might be able to enlighten me. He owns a 2001 Tundra and says it has either 235/245 Hp with 7000lbs towing capacity. The tundra's that are coming out now have the same engine but the Hp is increased but the towing capacity is decreased from 7000lbs to 6500lbs. Whats the reason for increase in Hp, and decrease in Towing capacity? Is it the VVT-i???
Thanks

VVT-i stands for variable valve timming. The valve timming changes at higher rmps which allows for more torque at lower rmp and more hp at higer rmps.

Also the 2005 Tundra was the first year for VVT-i in the trucks and had an output of 282 hp and the 2006 droped to 271 hp.

Towing isn't always based on the engine's power, could be due to a change in the frame design, brakes or the tow bar.

horsepower did not drop! the way they were measuring it was unacceptable to the government and they made them change the quoted 282 to 271 because of the revised method . same engine different year model just tweeked typo on 06 sticker
