I bought the 80 because I wanted 3 things, daily driver, tow rig for camper and to offroad. Daily driver is out / bought a Prism/Corolla...

... really wish the 80 had more power, drove around this weekend and loved it but just cannot tow my camper and now that is 50% of the reason I bought it. (6k tow rating)

The other 50% is light wheeling / Uwharrie...

Anyone here have experience with wheeling a Tundra? Same exact width, 128 inches of wheelbase vs 112 and 29 inches longer. I see a picture of a burgundy Tundra with the ONSC crew at OBX, would be excellent there, wondered about elsewhere?

No F&R locking diffs... not sure if there is a Detroit or ARB option out there for the v8 Tundra? IFS front so traction will be important.

Unless I get lucky and find a SAS Tundra for decent price there is not much chance I will ever bother, I am just not THAT hard core to do it myself.

But it CAN tow the camper....so sacrifice some offroad and regain tow ability. Add a winch on the front and I can pull myself across just about anything.... (thinking of the big rock/ledge before Kodak / no real bypass)

Would love any input... I think the 4.7 v8 has a decent reputation as far as lasting.

[Anyone been looking for a 80 series with factory e-locker? Has rocker guards and 285/75/16 MTRs already...!!]

Are you sure the 80 is rated to tow 6,000 lbs.? If so, the 100-series (and all the trucks w/ the 4.7 V8, including the Tundra) are only rated to tow 6,500 lbs., so you're not going up a whole lot there. I thought I read that the 80 was rated at 5,000 lbs. though, so I would think that going up to a 100-series would definitely make a difference.

The newer Tundra has a 10,000+ lbs. towing capacity, so you'd definitely be covered there, but I wouldn't wanna wheel one other than very light wheeling b/c it sure is a big mutha!

Hmm, VERY true about the 100 series, had forgotten they had the same engine! Would love a Lexus LX470 but I am sure they are still $$$?! Will have to see what they are selling for...

99 100 w/ rear locker just went for 8900 on autotrader; i called day after it sold and lady said shed had it for 7 years, loved it, but got a sedan now that the kiddies are gone. 145k miles.

i think the tundra would do fine as youve mentioned and if you still had the itch pick up/build a buggy and tow it to the trails that are off limits for the tundy. a good beafy skid, rear locker, and winch and youd be good to go.

ledge before kodak has a side line to the left now, all of the open open rigs made it last trip w/ no issues. ok, one, but tundras are fuel injected :D

I hadn't realized the 100s were quite that low, I had PM'd Alf earlier to see if he was interested in a trade for the 80!

If I could get enough out of the 80 I might could swing the difference but I am not sure what the 80s with E-lockers are going for. Tundras seem to be going in the 6-7k range for similar mileage...

I may end up waiting another year or two / allow the 100s to get down in the 6-7k range and then scoop one up! Keep borrowing dad's Tundra or father in laws Taco until then... (

Tundra I might could just do now but prob worth it to wait and get another Cruiser with the v8 I need and still has rear locker. Will have to research to see what all the 100's have in the offroad dept that I should be looking for.

98-2000 had option of rear e-locks. newer have rear air. think 98's require premium gas for some reason. might head over to slees guide to cruisers for more.

98 no rear AC option on LC. rear diff lock and sunroof optional. 98 LX470 had rear ac system.

99 had the option of rear ac (highly recommended in NC), sunroof and rear diff lock. (Ask me how I may know this...) ;>)

The 00+ had atrac and STABILITY control standard.

I'd say that it depends on if you want another suv or a truck. Tundra and 100 are pretty good but i'd have to say the Tundra (stock) will actually off road better. This is just from my personal experience. My father in law has an 03 and we went up into some trails with a 100 and a jeep a few years ago. (these we all trails in the high desert in cali) The jeep did perform the best but the little tundra actually really impressed me and I was able to take it up and down things I would have never thought possible. If your stuck on toyota only then it really depends on what you want. Other than that i'd say look for a diesel excursion with the 7.3 motor. They are selling for dirt cheap right now. There were a few for sale on nc4x4 a few weeks back. I think they are still there.
