Picked up an older Tuffy console...and am looking on mounting it in my 60. Who makes a mount for a 1986 FJ60? or what have you all don to fab?

Thx C

There was another post on this topic earlier today, with some nice pictures.

For mine, I got some 1" square steel tubing and built a bracket. Cut off pieces of the tubing to length to match the stock brackets on the floor, doubled them up for 2" lift off the stock brackets, and used the holes on the stock brackets to bolt through. I had to drill holes in the console to match up.

It took some planning and trial and error, but came out very nice.

You have to offset some for the e-brake to clear, and you want to make sure your rear seat clears the console when you fold it down.

I mounted a Cobra CB vertically to the driver's side of mine. Perfect spot for it.

I did something similar to Forestdan7, but I used flat stock and bent some brackets. I drilled holes and used "U" or "J" nuts on top to screw the tuffy into and used the oem bolt holes to secure the bottom. This worked fine for a couple of years, then when I got a welder I went back and welded in some stiffening supports. It does rock back and forth a little bit, but it's not going anywhere...

I positioned my front to back so I am able to use the tuffy cup holders on the front and on the rear and the rear seat still folds down. There is a little interference with the shift lever in 2nd and 4th, but it's not bad (I normally use bottles not cups in the cup holders), but I have a 5 speed, so when cruising on the highway the shifter is forward and out of the way.

I drilled holes on the console to match the stock and it fit and sat level with the truck... really nice mod.

I bolted my Tuffy to the existing mounts for the stock console. My FJ60 is a 1986. Take a piece of carboard or stiff paper and put it under the console. Set the console on the mounts and adjust to the desired position. I agree with the previous post about allowing room for the E-brake handle and not interfering with the rear seat fold up. The only downside to moving it over to the passenger side is that you (the driver) will have less elbow support: however, there is enough for me at least. Once you get it where you want it, take a short pencil and make marks on the paper. THen drill your holes in the bottom of the Tuffy.
CCOT sell some sort of brackets which I bought. I tried to figure out how in the hell they would work in about a dozen different positions and finally gave up and asked for a refund (they did). Their brackets may work for other year models but not for mine!
You will love the Tuffy. The pain of the terrible price will soon abate and you will enjoy being able to brace yourself on the padded top. It holds a ton of stuff and the lock really does seem secure. And...cup holders!

I bought my tuffy from CCOT and I did use the brackets. I unfortunetly did not take a picture of them installed. I think they help the box stay level in the cruiser. They are c shaped, where the holes on one side line up with the existing studs or nut holes and the others are just there. I mounted the bracket to the cruiser and then marked the bottom of the Tuffy. Drilled the holes and bolted it down. I felt funny about paying that much money for the tuffy and having to drill holes in it, but I guess that is the way it is done. I also edged mine closer to the passenger seat and far enough up so it would not effect the back seat leg room. If I can answer any other questions just PM me.

x3.

DO NOT trash the stock console until you've made the template -- the process gets much more complicated and imprecise without it.

Do you know whether the Tuffy center console that would fit in an 87 FJ60 is the same as the 8 inch wide Tuffy that would fit all Jeep Wranglers, CJ7's and Scramblers from 1976 through 1995? :hhmm:

I have just bought a Tuffy Console and am trying to mount it in my 0ct. 1984 fj60. If I try to directly bolt it into the four screw holes, the rear of the console hits the back seat. I haven't been able to find anything to jerry-rig a bracket from Home Depot. Can't weld yet. Any suggestions? Where do people usually go to get metal?

Northwest,
What year is your 60? I wonder if the CCOT bracket would work with my model year.

 Any help appreciated.

My truck is fall of 84 also: don't use the holes Tuffy gave ya, gots to drill a different set for the rear seat bottom to clear in the stowed position. HTH

Here's three shots of what I did.

That's 1" square steel tubing from Lowe's. Cut with a sawzall to length. And using hardware that actually screws into the stock bracket holes, with two nuts on the bottom underneath the bracket for good measure.

So far, it's rock solid. And I only had to drill one hole in the stock brackets.

If a thief was really, really industrious and thought he had a whole lot of time, he might be able to unbolt it from the brackets. But based on the amount of time it took me to worm my hands in there and get it mounted, probably won't happen.

Just make sure when you line it all up to mark the holes to drill in the Tuffy, you leave room for the rear seat to fold down, and for the shift lever to clear your Big Gulp in the cupholders when you're in 4th.

X2 on a 1984 fj60...no brackets just fits fine..mine does have the "skirt" around the rear of the console that sits on the carpet..

And there is still enough room to fold up the rear seat? Do the cup holders fit on the front? I have cup holders in the rear that I figure I'll need to remove when I fold up the rear seat. Do you have a pic of how far it sits back just so I make sure I understand what you are saying?

I've got cup holders on the front and the rear and I'm able to put the rear seat down. I did a bracket thing similar to forestdan7, but I think there is only a bracket on the back and the front is bolted directly to the OEM mount. I did have to drill new holes in the bottom of the Tuffy. The front cup holder is a little close to the shifter when in 4th (bottles are OK, big gulp---maybe not) but I have an H55F so the shifter is pushed forward more than it is pulled back. oh yea, mine has the skirt too.

no big gulps for me, unless the cup is only 2/3rds full and you're willing to squeeze it w/the shifter. there is actually some room tween folded seat and console, but prolly not enuf for the cupholder. sorry, no pix.

good luck!

Here are some the photos I took when I first put it in, sorry not very good. If you need more better PM me I'll take some more and get em to ya.

No cup holders on the rear of mine, got them on the front. If I mounted them on the rear the seat would hit them or at least sit on them unless I pushed the box way far forward, then I don't think you could change gears, My cup holders 3 3/8 inches back from the skirt of the boot for the gear shift, the shifter comes back real close to the top of the box, (mine has the radio garage on it). I don't have any passengers so don't need rear cup holders..

Land Pimp, way back, posted up some great photos of his 86 60 with the Tuffy. I went by that if I remember correctly.
