...school me. please. thanks.

Lots of $$$. How much are you really planning on bending. IMO it's one of those things where it's nice to know someone who has one.

My buddy has a hydraulic bender. He has dies for every size from 1/2 to 2. From what I understand, a new setup like that will go for 2-3k.

my buddy was telling me if it's for a single project that i should "butch up princess and go manual". he's got a jd squared (he's in venice so moochings out of the question) but has no experience with anything else...

I converted a JD squared #3 to hydraulic with out much expense. If it's just one job I suggest paying to have it done or find a buddy with a bender. If you do decide to take the plunge there are cheap bending setups out there. I'll see what I can find and post up.

That said doing a roll cage is not for the faint of heart and you will needs more tools then just the bender. How you are going to attach the cage...plates to the body or directly to the frame?

i've been looking at fab shops. bunch of people recommended racer off-road.
went up there monday and before they could get a quote to me they went
out of business. still weighing options but if you come across a bender i'd
really appreciate your input...

i hear you, more than anything i was just wondering if a $800 manual setup would work or do i need to drop 3 grand...

needs to be frame mounted. was playing with the idea of mocking it up,
tacking it together, and the turning it over to be finish welded. but having
to drag the rig to california and pay $250 to have it teched i'm not sure a
fab shop isn't the way to go, right now just exploring my options...

thanks for the help..

Steel prices are insane right now. I called IMS last week to get a quote on some 16 ga. 1"x2" rec tube i needed for a job, and was blown away by what Arleen quoted me for a 20' stick. I then called Coast Aluminum and got a quote for 1/8" wall 1"x2" rec tube and and found out that a 24' stick was actually cheaper then the steel. I was also told to expect another price increase in mid July by both companies.

Also for it's worth, go hydraulic on the bender. The savings that you would have by not going hydraulic now will be spent in the long run by you physically and in your time spent to complete the job on the back side. Just my two centavos worth.

There are several shops that have benders, if you will pay them to bend your stuff. Most don't advertise. Look for a shop that supports a race car. Last I knew, Doug's Transmissions had one in a back bay. He was at Mesa Dr & Southern.
You fab your stuff out of PVC and bend it with a blow torch, then take the mock-ups to the bender. The plastic doesn't need to be pretty, just shaped right.

Hunter Offroad.
He was the guy with the MCSO buggy at the 4 Peaks cleanup.
Cool guy, but tends to be busy.
Last time I talked to him he was working on a trophy truck or some serious buggy. The tube he had in there was like 2.5" and had to be close to .75 wall. Serious stuff. All DOM.

absolutly an $800 manual bender is good for a cage, or anything else. the machine is only as good as the operator ya know. my favorite bender happens to be hydro, i like it cause its a small self contained unit that doesnt mount to anything, you can use it on the floor, on the bench or even in your hands inside the rig or whatever your working on. its too expensive for as much as i'd use it.

thanks, i popped over and got in line (my brother is in denver)....
