Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a used 2008 LC (US) and am very happy with this vehicle. During my research, I pulled all the Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) to make sure I had any issues covered/understood. So here's my situation: I have a minor steering wheel vibration between 1700-2100 RPM, exactly as described in TSB 0071-09. My LC has 49,000 miles and is over 5 years old, so I'm out of warranty and would have to purchase the repair parts out of pocket. The repair consists of replacing the transfer case (around $2500 USD) and some other more minor parts, such as adding insulating padding. The level of vibration is not severe, though very unexpected for a vehicle of this level of quality. I'm not to the point of replacing the transfer case yet because I don't think the benefit is worth the cost. Out of curiosity, I looked up the TSBs for the LX570, and it has the exact same symptoms...with a slightly different repair procedure. For the LX, they also replace the transfer case and add the insulating materials, but ALSO they replace all the front differential mounts with revised parts, and add a dynamic damper to the front diff. I thought this was very interesting, since the front diff, transfer case, engine, and front chassis is nearly identical between the LX and LC. So my question is: Are the components recommended to be replaced on the LX due to a different standard for acceptable vibration within Toyota, with the LX being held to a higher standard? Or are there design differences between the LX and LC that prevent the LC from being able to accept the additional dynamic damper and updated front diff mounts?? I could get all the parts for the front diff mounts and dynamic damper for around $300, which I am considering trying just to see if it significantly reduces my vibration issue (I don't expect a complete fix without transfer case replacement). Has anybody had this repair procedure done on their LC or LX? Anybody else experiencing this vibration? Does anyone have enough experience with both the LX and LC to theorize on why they would add the damper to the LX but not the LC? Thank you so much for any advice! I will attach screenshots from each TSB to show the difference in repair parts.

not sure if this goes with that TSB but some LX and some LC have a option called VGSR (variable gear steering ratio) or something like that. I don't know the exact name or location but I believe more LX have this option so maybe the parts for this option are in this area thus require more replacement parts?? I'm not even sure if the USA/north america LC even had this option

Fisher112,
Do you have any more info about the part fix from Lexus with regard to applying it to the Toyota?

Seems like Lexus has a bit higher standard. All the upgraded parts Lexus has can be used on the LC. The damper will reduce some of the vibration as well as the upgraded diff mounts. IMO it is worth a try for the dollars. Those mounts do get old, in addition the fix part numbers have a bit more rubber to help isolate vibrations. These upgraded parts are used only for those customers that report vibrations. Apparently the issue was fixed as of a specific serial number going forward for Lexus, not sure when the Toyota Fix went in. I do know the TSB was issued in 2008 for Toyota and the Lexus TSB is dated 2009. Interesting to note the Lexus TSB says to install the new parts excluding the transfer case (if it is a newer serial number) which implies there are other reasons for vibration and the new mounts and damper will help to reduce vibrations regardless of the transfer case.

Even though this TSB only applies to '08 and '09 year models I have the same vibration as described in the TSB in my '14. I had thought it was caused by exhaust resonance, but this thread has me thinking otherwise. I had been debating even bringing up my issue to the dealer due to past experiences where the attempted fix causes more issues in the long run. However, I wonder if there could be any long term reliability issues if my vibes are truly coming from the front diff. Thoughts?

Can anyone please advise if there is a remedy for 200 series resonance steering wheel vibration and droning around 1800 to 2200 rpm under slight load.

Same here, I got that vibration on my 2015. I have it usually, but then 2 days ago it was gone and now it's back.
Same road/speed load, only difference it was pouring rain.

I've raised the issue at two different dealerships. They both said they could not duplicate the resonance, for the time being I'm at least happy that I've documented the issue while under warranty. It doesn't really bother me --not as much as the second row seat squeak or the useless oil gauge anyway...

My '03 V8 4Runner had a harmonic driveline drone that started at about 62 mph and went to about 68 mph. It only happened under steady state throttle (like with the cruise control engaged). I couldn't convince Toyota to do anything about it.

But I did find a TSB for the Lexus GX470, which had the exact same drivetrain. The TSB had two parts. The first part was a mass damper added to the front diff. I got the part for that and had my mechanic install it. This reduced the droning somewhat. The second part involved significant disassembly of the transfer case, so I decided not to do that.

I think Lexus takes better care of its customers than Toyota USA.

My 2009 has this issue. Did you ever try replacing the related parts to see if that helped?

I had an 08 that did it. Mostly when going up a hill at interstate speed. Decided to part ways rather than spend the money for a fix that may not cure the issue. Such as an overpass. I tried out another '08 that had it way worse in a bad way. The service record showed the owner tried numerous wheel balances. I ran from that one.

Got a Tundra and it exhibits the underload resonance on occasion. Back off the gas and reapply and it goes away.

Having the same issue with my newly purchased 2009LC. It’s worse when I pull a 5000 boat. It’s driving me nuts. Anyone actually try the repair?

2018 LC. Not sure if the same issue but noticed a vibration on the gas pedal in the 1900-2000 RPM range. Slightly tightened the 2 bolts on the dynamic damper (also known as harmonic damper?) and that appears to have largely fixed the issue.

(NOTE: the torque spec is pretty low (9 ft-lbs) based on thread below, so be careful cranking on it)
