Cranks over and over, but does not start?

Normally, it starts on just a "blip" of the key, not even for 1 second, and away it goes, so normally i just flick the key and away. However, i flipped the key the other day and released it as normal and the engine hadn´t started. So i tried again, but i just cranked over and over. On occasion, recently, if i don´t catch it on the first flick of the key, i´ve no chance. Walk to work, and try again later.

Hopefully someone can tell me whats wrong with it.

How does your vehicle "turn off?" I just had the same problem last week. Mine has a 12 volt VSV to close an intake shutter. The VSV ended up sharing a ground with a circuit that was constantly shorting out and was always closing the shutter, so the truck woudn't start until i unhooked the vac hose from the vac. pot. Then it started up fine and kept going. HTH

you could be getting air in the system from your recent mech experience...

These are the most likely causes in order from the Gregorys 513 landcruiser diesel manual
1st Try spraying some quick start spray,Aerostart is one brand.Disconnect the air filter tube at the intake manifold and spray in there.
If it starts and runs it maybe a glow plug problem or low compression.

2 No fuel in tank

3 Air in system -bleed

4 leaking injector pipes/loose connections

5 blocked fuel filter/lines

6 contaminated fuel

7 faulty fuel cut solenoid. When you turn the ignition ON the red lights on the dash appear and there should be an audible click from the fuel cut solenoid on the injector pump.No click,no start!

8 starter motor too slow

9 incorrect pump timing

10 blocked injectors

11 low compression.

The manual says DO NOT TOUCH the mechanical workings of the injector pump until all other possibilties have been checked
IMO you should revisit the shop that "fixed it",find out exactly what they touched and find someone reputable with proven experience to correct it.

In Australia when you have problems like this, its time for a diesel service and costs about $800 AUD including parts and labour.
For that you get rebuilt injectors with new tips, new glow plugs the pump removed and bench tested and pump timing set.
With that done it should be ok for 3-4 years with just oil and filter changes.

Im guessing it will be the injectors and glow plugs .
Also if you have low sulpher diesel it will wear out the pump prematurely, big problem in oz.The sulpher helps lubricate the pump.

Hi Rosco,

I´ve been thinking about what is happening, i.e when it starts it´s fine, and wonder if it could be the relay for the glow plugs? I´ve just been home to check under the bonnet for this relay, but cant see it anywhere, and infact, cant see any glow plugs anywhere. Do you know where they might be hiding? (i know this makes me sound like a right ****, but they are just not visible!!)

put a tester light to the glow plugs and turn the key, see how long the lights stay on...

Where are the glow plugs? I know it sounds stupid, but i cant see the buggers

hummm, you will have a glow screen right? so that will be the nuts coming out the front and rear of the throttle body. you will need to remove the rubber protectors and test there...
sorry my mistake...

you wouldn´t happen to have a picture of where i can find this flow Screen???

Also, do you know where the glow plug/screen relay is housed?

Scot

look where the intake tube goes into the throttle body and just below where it eners there is a nut towards the front and to the rear, on the side you will see (i beleive) 3 wires follow them around the side and you should see the rubber boots over the nuts, peel these back carefully and you will see the nuts. test there...

Scot You said in the 1st post it was no longer starting at all,so is it starting now?

To answer your post, Rosco, no it wasn´t starting at all, but now this has happened.......

Things have changed a little now, The starter motor is not engaging, or the solenoid isn´t operating properly. I bump started it fine, but just wont engage.

If it is the starter motor, do you think this could also have been the issue with it not starting before.? I.e just turning over and over and over without kicking up?? It dind´t seem to be turning over slowly though?

Scot

Scot you said in your other post that it used to "start up straight away" and thats how it should be.
All that hard starting has probably run down the battery or maybe your starter was on its way out and this has finished it a bit earlier.

In warmer climates the non turbos start easily with out the glow plugs.

Recharge your battery before you touch the starter.
This is important, clean both the battery lead terminals at BOTH ENDS until you have shiny metal.

The starter may just need a service which is a brush replacement, bearings oiled or replaced and any corrosion or dirt cleaned off.

The problem is solved. After charging the batteries for 24 hours, I turned the key and Voila! It must have been happening due to excessivly low charge in the batteries.

Oh well, Thanks to everyone for their input and help

Scot
