Trip planning help-mexico

Ive been searching for about the last 3 hours on some sort of mapping program that includes mexico. Ive found some sites that include Canada...but thats not exactly on the way. If you guys know of an online service that has some sort of trip planning into Mexico could you send the link my way? Many thanks.

Try www.expeditonportal.com and www.expeditionswest.com for some links and map info.

You'll find that Mexico is tough for GPS maps. The Garmin world basemap is better than you'd think, but doesn't include many roads; only towns....gotta go back to the paper maps for those.

That being said...roads change, and many of the best Mexico maps have a perfectly straight major highway where in reality the road is switchbacked and potholed.

The only way to go in Baja is the Baja Almanac...it's online, just do a search and you'll find it.

We had some fun with Mexico maps on our last BMW venture...it's on the trip reports at exped. portal.

Don't sweat not having GPS too much....just turn South and go!

I am not sure about GPS info on this site, but there is a good amount of stuff regarding going to Mexico. Most of the members seem to be from California.

I looked a bit last night, and found some 1:500,000 CDs of older Russian Military maps of Mexico offered by Touratech (do a search and you'll get it.) They're in Russian, but the topo lines are there...although they're outdated as to roads...

Where in Mexico are you looking at going?

Those are the best I've ever had available in my Mexican travels - and call me old fashioned However, I prefer paper maps.

Check out these GPS maps for Baja. They only work with Garmin, but they look like a great resource. I am looking at a gps for my trip to Baja this summer, and will most likely get these maps.

We plan on going through Mexico and down to Panama, maybe even as far as Angel Falls if time permits...but its looking like Panama is as far as we are going to get. Thanks for all the information guy...

I think this might solve your map problems...just use whatever you find and convert them to usable GPS formats...
