OEM skidplate is junk

I agree that the factory skid-plate is a piece of junk. I got one with my 07 FJ because the guy I bought the truck from was a "Toyota truck champion"(whatever that means) and he was able to get the skidplate and rockrails for no charge. I figured...its free, what the hell. When my truck arrived, I checked out the plate and immediatly noticed that it was strictly cosmetic. Sure enough the first time out on the trail (in deep sand in northern Michigan, the skidplate jammed into the sand (it hangs down very low) and got bent up into the front bumper. Luckily it didn't damage the bumper(now a moot point since ordering the fab fours front and warn rear bumpers...cant wait till they get here!). If you are serious about wanting a functional skidplate or if you want to protect the entire underside of your FJ, Full skidplates are available from Man-A-Fre and from BUDBUILT. The budbuilt are a little more (about 800 for full skid plates) but I've been told they are easier to install and tougher...not to mention you can get them powdercoated in ANY color! (red or yellow look sweet on Voodoo Blue.
Bottom line is that if you are not using your FJ on the trail, then the factory plate is a fine cosmetic upgrade. If you plan to actually use this truck for its intendid purpose, the Factory plate is a piece of junk which might more cause MORE damage to your vehicle if it takes a hit. And like I said, mine folded from hitting sand! I don't want to think about what a rock or hard packed dirt would do to it.

Bought my TRD in Dec. 2006.
LOVE IT. (paid 2-k under invoice...took a while to get that price).

They threw in a solid black brush guard & tail light guards.

The shocks are slightly tighter than stock shocks, but I switched to the "E" load rates Firestone Destination MT's on the heavier Pro-Comp rock krawler steelies and i LOVE the ride on & off road (never liked TA's on wet pavement). I WILL likely upgrade the sway bar links and possibly the tie rods once I knock it out of alignment one day, but so far so good. I'm considering having a local shop fabricate a sort of "X" brace to hopefully eliminate some cowl shake, protect my x-fer case and MAYBE even stiffen the frame enough to keep my fender apron BULGE at bay!

I waxed it twice with McGuiers hi tech wax and the roof looks great (and I park under trees sometimes).

Factory roof rack is SOLID but LIGHT WEIGHT. You WILL likely destroy it if you try to remove it (I like it and unless it leaks, will have no reason to take off).

Air bag sensors work on INERTIA sensing not IMPACT so no problem there.

I LOVE the look with the MT blackwalls, black steelies w/ black centercaps and black accesories (although my wife says it looks like I have 5 spare tires). The Destinations are AMAZING all the way around.

After looking at the TRD SE my guess in feb was toyota had a warehouse full of the smaller rims, they had lots of pickups with the exact rims on the lot in petaluma and santa rosa. I had 35k to spend total tax tags etc.. and two choces TRD SE 30k +ttl or convience package 1.
I chose #2 at 24K 29 out the door and added ProComp stage 2 6" lift 2.4k 600 to rent a stall for a week with lift and tools. 3k for 22 x9.5 black trench wheels and 325 50 22 nitto terra grapplers, 300 for trail gear sliders, 300 for cai, 50 atrac switch. spent the same amount but I like much more than the SE.

22's? Seriously?

Glad you're happy. Love to actually see you wheel with 22's

22s

I also have the stock aluminum wheels with 295 toyo mts in the barn for playing in the dirt.
If I make it to surf n turf I might leave the 22's on to see how they work.
Is the all black get hot in the sun? that and the Manual trans were the reasons I didnt get the TRD SE. I'm not so good in tough situations with gears and have proven it repeatedly...

Gloss, satin, or flat

On the TRD edition does the roof paint match the rest of the body? I have not seen one up close.

Got mine in December. It was originally $32,800 then I added the towing package, roof rack, low jack, they only thing I don't have is the sub woofer, which didn't come with any of the TRD SE's originally... I love it! The suspension really makes a difference off-roading! It's geared higher than the original fj40's for off-roading and lower for freeway... Plus the TRD special edition is full time 4 wheel drive instead of part time like the regular fj's though they do have a full time option...I love the black top, and gun metal rims! They're originally what caught my attention! I get nothing but compliments on it!:grinpimp:

I would encourage everyone to get the TRD package!!!

Though, they only made 3200 TRD Special Editions (mines number 734) and they've all been sold! But there are many used one's with hardly any miles on e-bay/auto trader ect. It would save the effort of modifying and original fj and probably some $$$!

And yes, the roof is the same color (black diamond) as the rest of the body!
And no, it doesn't really get any hotter in the sun!
The stock skid plate is a piece of POO!

The TRD shocks are 50mm Bilsteins and quite stout. they are what were on the Millen's race FJC in the 1000. As an OEM unit, they are pretty good.

They're not 50mm bilstein shock absorbers, They're 46.
