rove_mcanus axle splines are ok, not sure I understand how that would cause the car to start out in 3rd gear when "drive" is selected. nonetheless, still no success in isolating the problem.

Can anyone explain to me why the solenoids work when the CDL is engaged and do not work when the CDL is off?

Well I have just discovered that If I start off from a VERY VERY slow start, barely putting any pressure on the gas pedal, the car will shift normally through all gears. The minute I put any pressure on the gas pedal, car goes into third.. Any suggestions? Still baffled.

I finally have decided to change out the #1 and #2 shift solenoids. Fairly simple job, took all of about 2 hours. Took the car for a drive, no change...car still starts out in 3rd gear. Pushed the CDL button, car drives and shifts normally. stumped. Any suggestions?

Finally solved the shifting problem. My advice to anyone that encounters the same symptoms, i.e. starting out in 3rd gear...BEFORE you spend the money on shift solenoids check the electrical plugs above the starter. These are difficult to get at from the engine bay. Go through the drivers side front wheel well. There are 2 plugs (round and rectangle shaped) just above the starter, pull them apart, clean them and reconnect. After I did this, the car shifted perfectly. I would also recommend checking the plug connections attached to the block on the starter side and the transmission ground.

Glad you figured it out, got any photos of the plugs/connectors involved?
