I have a 94 FZJ80. When I put the car in Drive, it seems to start out in 3rd gear so I have to go from L to 2 to D. I pulled codes 62, 63, 64 came up. I am assuming I need to replace the #1 and 2 shift solenoids.
The strange thing is that if I lock my CDL (center locking differential) the car shifts perfectly throughout every gear.

Does this mean that my solenoids are good and that there is a problem somewhere else?

I don't have my FSM near me right now, so I'm not sure what the codes are. Is your kickdown cable adjusted properly? If it is really loose it might cause the symptoms you are describing.

Solenoid time.

I thought I had the solenoid issue too. Do your gear lights on the dash work? After my transmission was put back in all I had was park, reverse, and drive lights. No N, 2, or L when those were selected and the truck would start in third pretty frequently. I adjusted the neutral safety switch (also apparently tells the ECU what gear is selected) and all was well with it. Just one thing to check before plunking out cash on the solenoids.

Looks like those codes deal with the solenoids though, unfortunately.

I have tried adjusting the kick-down (throttle) cable but it hasnt helped. The codes point directly to the shift solenoids being the problem. I have read in this forum that changing the solenoids does not always fix the shifting problem. I have checked my electrical connections, etc but nothing seems to work.

What I cannot figure out is why the car shifts normally throughout every gear when I push my "center locking differential" button on my console. If the car shifts properly with the CDL engaged, maybe the existing solenoids are good and something else is the problem....something simple...stumped.

People have had issues with one of the connectors on the that goes to the transmission causing issues similar to the shift solenoids.

There is an electrical plug that sits on the transmission...is that the plug you are referring to or is there another plug inside the tranny pan? I brought the car into the Toyota dealership. The mechanic looked at it and said the connector for the solenoid was good (?). He also thinks the solenoids are ok. If the solenoids were bad, they would not shift properly when the Center Locking Differential was engaged. I paid for an hour labor, they quoted me another $450.00 to diagnose the problem.
still determined to figure this out...

I have the same problem occasionally. Does your CEL come on? I've never thought to check the codes because my CEL never comes on.

For me, it is a round connector about 1" in diameter. It is located on driver side of the block right above the starter. I think I partially pulled out a pin when I did my motor replacement. It is a super PITA connector to get 2 hands on. If mine starts acting up I pull the connector, clean it, and push it back together. Fixes it every time.

My 93 did that but only every once in a while. Then I had one week where it happened twice so I replaced the solenoids. I replaced all, if one is going bad the others can not be far behind IMHO.

Never happened since. ;)

The error codes only indicate an electrical connection issue to the solenoids. There is no code, nor a way of the computer to recognise a faulty solenoid.

IF it works fine all the time when the cdl is locked i would first check there is nothing broken in the front end (diff, cvs etc) and then look for a faulty earth to the transmission. I think there is a strap that goes from the chassis to the transmission.

UWDave, pulled that 1 in diameter plug just above the starter and cleaned it ...what a B*&^% trying to get my hands in there to pull it apart. Suffice to say, didn't help, still not shifting correctly. Does that plug lead to the tranny? Maybe the connection at the tranny needs to be cleaned...I just cant see where it goes.
Also, Is there any way to test my TPS? Still stumped

Going to check the faulty ground strap to the tranny today per rove_mcanus

Anyone know if the Toyota ?hand held tester can check the function of the transmission solenoids?? IDK

Yes. You use the tester to change gears. If the transmission doesn't shift using the tester then the problem is either the solenoids or valve body. If it shifts fine with the tester the problem is something electrical other then the solenoids (wiring, ect ecu)

mrossipir,

Did you ever figure out the root of the problem? I have the same codes and symptoms you describe. Plus, it frequently shifts out of overdrive lockup for no apparent reason. I have a '94 without the manual CDL lock.
Based on the troubleshooting flow chart in the manual my main suspect is the #2 solenoid. I'd sure like to know what you found before I start replacing things.

I had codes 63 and 64 i think. Or maybe it was 62 and 63....

Anyways-
Solenoid replacement to the tune of $600.

Check,
I have not figured out the problem yet, but I am determined to do so. When I engage my CDL switch, the car shifts normally. That tells me that the solenoids are not stuck and that there may be an electrical problem somewhere. I have unplugged and cleaned any plugs leading to the tranny but nothing has worked. I hoping someone here on Ih8mud has had the same problem and can point me in the right direction.

Did you check the front axle flanges for stripped splines? That would give the exact same symptoms.

It wouldn't give error codes on the transmission computer, but it's possible they are just left over from a previous unrelated problem.
