I am experienceing some minor transmission issues.

I have searched and the shift solenoid seems to be the knowledgable response. Or linkage adjustment

Anyway, everyone says the transmissions a bulletproof

However, I don't see any response from the origional posters with issues stating that the solenoid was actually the issue. I am hoping for some feedback for 80 series owners on weather or not the shift solenoid were the issue.

I am taking my rig in for a flush and fill in the morning, with the option of a screen clean if the tech thinks its necessary. (this is an extra 110.00)

I currently have dirty looking fluid, and what I would call clunky shifting from 1-2 while car is in D.

I need a FSM, will order one tomorrow, Rig is a 1993

Also- what is the recomended code reader??

replace the shift cable(kick down cable) almost always the problem.

even trying to adjust the orig cable doesn't always help.

if the screen is gonna be cleaned then, he will be right there to do the cable(have to remove the pan to replace the cable)

all the guys on the board seem to really like the ScanGuage. i don't have one, i have a snap on mt 2500 for my job. alot of the guys that come in have a ScanGuage. anyone else will be able to tell you more about them.

From searching, I became a bit confused about the scan guage. I looks like some guys hard mount it?

I assume the scan guage, will read tranny codes. (Y/N)

Is the kick down a DIY job?

I believe the screen is a DIY job, I am not sure of the order of things.

Current plan is Flush Fill, (was thinking that I could do the screen myself, next week)

Dose this make sense, or should I do the screen first/kickdown, then the flush fill?

the scan guage will most likely not give you any trans info. i do believe it is Generic OBD2. in order for you to see trans info, you need specific software. you can pick up an OTC scanner with manufacturer specific software for fairly cheap.(expect to spend a couple hundred $)-dont hold me to it....

(edit) i just saw the 1993 you posted. X2 on what B said. i can pull codes and read info on a 94, but not sure about the 93(just haven't tried)

the cable is simple, but difficult at the same time. the way it is routed/attached is simple, but removing it from the trans can be a bit akward. if you consider yourself fairly competent with repairs, then sure it is easy, but if you question yourself on the filter change(trans) then i would have someone do it.

if you do the cable yourself, get an FSM if you don't already have one. the cable is sensitive to adjustment. if it isn't right the trans may not shift through all gears.

do the screen/cable first...then the flush if a shop is doing the flush. just droping the pan doesn't get all the fluid out(DUH). you will use alittle bit more fliuid that way, but trans fluid is cheap.

Adjustment of the kick-down cable is simple. If the cable is bad and needs to be replaced then the R&R is more complicated. Start with adjusting the cable first.

if you like the truck, are cleaning the trans filter, and have alot of miles on the clock, then just get a new cable and be done with it.

if the cable is very worn(high mileage) then the adjustment of the old cable wont correct the shift issues.

Your 1993 is not OBD-II so you cannot use a Scanguage. Your 1993 tranny codes are read with a paperclip.

Yes.

Paper clip- ok I guess I will search that.

I elected after reading part of the DIY tranny flush to DIM.

I ordered the FSM and ESM total was 151.19

Miles are 148K

Replacing the kickdown cable (or throttle cable as Toyota calls it) is not the easiest thing to do for someone who has basic mechanical abilities.

If the transmission is attached to the engine and in the truck it will be difficult to almost impossible to replace the cable without dropping the valve body on the transmission. This calls for extreme care what environment you do this in--even a little bit of debris in the tranny or valve body can easily cause serious harm.

If you feel uncomfortable dropping the valve body (and the many different lengthed bolts), I'd recommend a trained mechanic to do this swap.

Good luck.

REAL TIME HELP

Is the cooler supposed to run through the lower radiator and then through the one in front of the radiator??

It is currently just plumbed through the one in the radiator, the other hoses are there just disconected. I blew through them. The cooler is clear appears to be in good shape.

I think/hope this is the work of a shody shop.

I pulled the battery box so I can see everything clearly.

I believe its just suppposed to run through the one in front of the grill. That would be a cleaner/more logical install (IMHO)

Like I said, have a real mechanic do the job...

:p

:flipoff2:

So I called the local dealer, seems to be that perhaps. 1993's came with either a seperate cooler or a one mounted in the radiator. I thought perhaps there were two in series.

I presume that in this instance, some one installed a new radiator with the cooler built in used that instead.

Its just a guess at this point.

I fllushed the fluid this afternoon took about 40 min like everyone said.

Drove it 700 miles after the flush-shifts smoother. I am certain that its a solonoid/kick down cable issue at this point. FSM should show up on Tuesday. (Compton-Santa Cruz can't take more than a couple days) I have lots of electrical issues, presume they are related grounding, dirty connections.

I have concidered hooking up the tranny coolers in series, just for kicks (that could be the way it was from the factory). Wouldn't think it could hurt anything

no .. cooler better .. but I don't think your problem will be related to temp on the tranny .. laser thermometer will help if you don't have a tranny temp gauge.

Mine runs on the town around 160 - 190°F 210°F max on the HW .. ( I'm on 315 and run a good front tranny cooler )

Replace cable, pull pan, clean screen, flush oil until clean. It will prob. run like new. my 2 cents Mike

I know- its not cooler releated. Pretty certain that the shift cable/kickdown cable needs to be replaced.

It seems to up shift "hard" sometimes with a flat spot between shifts.

The "D" light is out, from searching there seems to be a coralation between the lights going out and shifting issues.

Unrelated.

From the seach function, there seemed to be a coralation between

Reverse issues and the "R" being illiumintaed

2nd issues and the "2" being illiumunted

Hopefully the maunals show up today, I intend on cleaning electrical contacts. To see if that helps with some of the other issues I am having.

I didn't get a "deal" on this rig but I am happy with it.

Dome light (all 3 have stopped working) They were working on the switch, One of the power windows

I hope to hear from Cdan tomorrow so I can get the parts ordered to rebuilt the front end.

I have had a good trip so far to CA, there are alot of nice cruisers down here.

In Scotts Valley for a couple days, then headed to Linden, Walnut Grove, and back to WA

2nd issues and the "2" being illiumunted

now that I think a bit on it .. I had some issues tryiing to engage2nd manually due to the shift " pathern " seems to be a little out or range for 2nd in relation with the tranny lever ..
