I was wandering if anybody knows a good transmission shop or anyone who rebuilds them in knoxville. Also should i spend any money on having this beefed up or are they strong enough stock. Also what are your opinions on putting in a used one cost comparison- and what should it cost to have mine rebuilt(94 fzj80) as well as have the transfer case resealed. Thanks

I have personally gathered a quote from a reputable shop here in town for a complete rebuild: $2800.00. I also found a website (forgot to bookmark it) that sells a rebuilt transmission for $1800.00 with a one-year warranty.

If you want to get yours beefed up, I would suggest looking into an extreme valve body from Wholesale Automatic Transmissions (I hear there is a distributor in the states), as I have heard good reviews.

As pertaining to them being tough in stock form, there is a phrase for these transmissions, do a search for "bus transmission."

I have a friend that owns "Just Jeeps" in Knoxville. They work on other stuff. Might want to give them a call and see what kind of price they'll give you. I do know the do quality work.

It's outside of Knoxville, but Allen's Transmissions in Newport. He's the only one I trust.
Have you tried CruiserParts.net yet?

Whats wrong with the transmission?
Just wanting to make sure it actually needs to be rebuilt. I have seen a lot of these trucks that the owner was told it needed a transmission, but it actually just needed a drive plate or a shift solinoids.

True dat...

the transmission was starting to slip about 16 months ago pretty often. i had the fluid flushed and it has done much better other than leaking. I had some maintenance done recently and asked my mechanic to take a look at the leak and he said "its leaking from everywhere it could leak" cruiser has 305k so its still running decent . But what do you guys think .He also said t case was leaking and suggested having it resealed thanks

By "much better" do you mean that it is shifting correctly and not slipping? or do you mean that its still slipping a little.
If it isn't slipping, I think I would clean it up and see where it's really leaking. Personally, i don't trust any mechanic that says "its leaking from everywhere it could leak". Once I determined where it is actually leaking I would determine if the transmission needed to be removed to fix the leak. If it doesn't need to be removed, I would just fix the leaks. If it does need to be removed then i would consider having a good shop go through it.

by much better i mean only maybe once every few weeks i feel a tiny slip when changing into next gear, i believe first to second

There was recently a low mileage used one available nearby (100 miles away). Came out of a 96-97 ~100k mile LX, they were asking $750 and had the transfer case available also for a bit more.

Not sure they fit back to 97' but, a good used one might be an option.

I think i would try the clean / fix leak idea for both the transmission and the transfer case. How bad are the leaks?

'96-'97 is a different transmission

Adjusting the "kickdown" cable will likely cure it.

Not to be too persnickety, but you mean 95-97. 93-94: A442F. 95-97: A343F.

Agreed, I was just referring to the available transmission that was quoted

there are probably more than the size of a quarter nightly

Thats not too bad, but any leak needs to be diagnosed and repaired if possible.

I would do as CJF said and adjust the kickdown cable (do a search, there should be a lot of threads on how to), repair the leaks, and drive it until the tranny dies (probably never).
It just doesn't sound like it needs a rebuild to me.

I will try to clean everything in the next couple of days and take pics as it leaks hopefully i can figure this out. Thanks

This tranny thing is my fear. I'm currently rebuilding my engine but doing a trans in a whole other animal! And finding someone who is "good" at an import tranny is not an easy task.

Sounds like the flush fixed most of your problems. Don't get it rebuilt for no reason, it may end up being worse off. Find a new mechanic, he sounds like an idiot. Oh yea, and figure out what was leaking exactly. Could be just a t-case seal.

A flare shifting form 1st to 2nd gear is pretty normal for an a442f.
