My transmission fluid level drops substantially when hot (by a couple inches on the stick).

Anyone experience the same thing?

By the "cool" and "hot" markings on the dipstick, it should read higher when hot.

Thoughts?

Well, no.

I had always presumed that "cool" meant engine not running, with engine and fluid at ambient temp.

Is "cool" right after start up with engine running?

Transmission fluid level is always measured running. The pump circulates fluid forward (and up) to the cooler. This can drain back when stopped, resulting in inaccurate readings.

Ideally the transmission is suppose to be at operating temp, but I believe there is a cold and hot mark on the stick.
So, I add about 3.5 qt. after drain, drive around for a while, and add atf to the 'hot' mark when she's warmed up.

Steve.
