Transmission Filter Change?

I read the thread about doing the "fluid exchange" in the FAQ - (good stuff!) - but I was surprised I didn't see anything about dropping the pan and changing the filter.

Is this something that you guys just don't mess with, or did I just miss it?

My situation is that I just bought this '92 FJ80 a couple of weeks ago and want to get all the old fluids/oil/grease out and new synthetics in. I THINK the PO followed the manual and took it to the dealer for all the maintenance, but one never knows.

I would assume I should change the transmission filter as well as flushing the fluid... Right?

If so, what kind of gasket goop do you guys recommend?

the transmission filter is of a metal screen type, you pull it out clean it and put it back in, wipe out the sediment in the pan, clean the metal off the magnets and put it back up with sealant, FIPG is the recomended goop to use, you can get it at your local Toyota dealer a lot of people use it and have good sucess with it. I used an industrial high temp RTV made by GE because I had it on hand, when I run out if it I will get some FIPG.

ashooter- no mention of filter because the 80s don't have one. They have a re-usable screen that just needs to be cleaned.

As for "flushing" the fluid- with a '92 with unknown maintenance history you probably have a good amount of miles on it. Flushing a tranny with unknown maintenance history is not recommended (ask me how I know). It can cause major problems by dislodging varnish to the point where tranny replacement/rebuild may be required. If you insist upon a flush, do a fluid exchange instead, which uses the tranny's own pump and not an external pump to replace the fluid. Also, make sure no detergents, cleaners, or additives are used. However, I wouldn't even recommend that for your situation. Here's what I would recommend:

- Drain fluid through tranny drain plug
- Drop pan
- Clean pan, screen
- Put pan, screen back on
- Refill tranny fluid (should take approx. 6 qts. after a pan drop)
- Drain/Fill tranny fluid every 5k miles to slowly increase % of new fluid in tranny until fluid looks new

And no, there's no problem in mixing the old fluid (probably non-synthetic) with the new synthetic fluid

As for what to use to reseal tranny pan, use Toyota FIPG (form in place gasket) which you can get from Cruiserdan at American Toyota (see sponsor link in upper right hand corner for info).

I changed the screen when I baught my truck and then put a standard ph8a remote filter adapter in series with my tranny cooler. once a year I drain and refill the trany and put a new filter on. the filter in this pic is a wic hydrolic filter and it is mounted behind my custom front bumper. at this moment I am running a plain old fram ultraguard I got at wallyworld.
