I am a new owner of a 1997 Anniversary addition Cruiser. I've already gotten hooked on maintenance and my wife swears I'm gonna move into the garage fill time. I've done the differentials and Xfer.

Tonight, I drained the tranny and expected to get 1.7 liters (2 quarts) out as the Manuel and some posts have specified. I checked the level prior to draining and it was right at hot when running so it was spot on. When I drained I got just over 4 quarts out. It appears it will take just about that to get the level right again.

Am I missing something, or is that the right fluid amount for my rig?

Thanks for any help. I've learned so much from the forum just scanning through and I can't tell you guys how much I appreciate all the information you have posted.

I have a '96 and I drain 4 qts at each drain and fill. Sorry, can't recall any more details off the top of my head but I think you're on par :)

Thanks TeeDiggs that helps a ton. It just threw me when twice as much fluid drained as the Manuel indicated.

A follow up question is whether I should be dropping the pan and cleaning or replacing the trans filter or just calling it good with fresh fluid. I'm going to do one more drain and fill next week to get as much fresh in as I can, and could do the pan then. I've never taken a pan down before and don't want to create leaks where there aren't any. If people do think I should do it, any tips or advice? Is there a gasket on the pan I'll need to replace?

Thanks again for being willing to share your knowledge!

I tend to clean or replace the filter once on any new-to-me rig and then call it good.

One easy way to go is a kit from NAPA that has the filter, filter gasket, and a rubber pan gasket (to be used in place of sealant). Works great.

Dose anyone know anything about the Auto Transmissions?

Is it related to drain and fill? If not then you may do better either starting a new thread or better yet, check the search box because nearly every issue you can think of has been gone over ad naseum...cept for weird overheating issues :flipoff2:

Being looking for a bit more info myself on servicing the auto.. Have done some searching the threads .. But didn't seem to be much there... Some pll say you can clean the filter.. I know there is a type of gasket adhesive when u drop the pan that needs to be scrapped off

No filter, just a screen.

4 quarts is correct. The manual is wrong on this one, don't know why.

I appreciate the replies. It's always tough when your a nervous new owner trying to sort stuff out. This forum has been a lifesaver for sure.

I haven't tackled dropping the pan and changing the filter yet but I have done a few drain and fills to get fresh fluid. It's been just about 4.2 quarts out and in each time to get it dead on (checked warmed up with the engine running). I used a Dex/Merc fluid as it's the current replacement for Dexron 3 which has been pulled by GM and replaced with Dexron VI. The newer Dexron VI is supposed to be backwards compatible but the lower viscosity made me nervous and I went with what would be closest to the original manufacturer specs when the tranny was engineered. I used a fresh crush ring from dealership on the drain plug and torqued it to 19lbs.

After 2 drain and fills through the plug the fluid is clean and fresh. It'll buy me some time to get up the time to drop the pan and change the filter out.

Thanks again for the replies guys...
