hi,
wondering why there is no breather on the oem 4 speed transmission? got them on the xfer case, diffs, and steering gear, why not the tranny? how does it breathe?

Yes it does. I was stumped by that as I changed from a 3 speed(with a breather/vent) to a 4 speed...no aparent breather.

You're good.:)

alright. so why doesn't oil come bubbling up out of the shift tower anyway? just a spring and a clip there. no gasket or seal.

Why should it? There's not that much oil in there. No where near the top.

Mark...

the shift tower has to be where it breathes from: there is no other place for air to move in and out of a well sealed transmission. it is just a different style of breathing mechanism than that found on the diffs, xfer and steering gear. i find it an interesting fact, however, as at 60+ mph the oil in the tranny is pretty seriously invigorated and i imagined that the oil would gush up to the top of the shift tower to the rubber boot that fits over it. and, since many of these boots are cracked and/or missing, that this would be a major leak point.

the matter that started my inquiry is the leak in my tranny that is emanating from the reverse idler gear adjustment nut at the top of the tranny case. i figured if oil was able to get up and out of there that it should be able to get up and out of the shift tower as well....

am i rambling on? i think i'm rambling on....

Just for s***s and grins, remove the shifter, put the transfer in neutral, trans in 4th and rev up the RPMs and see what happens....

don't think i'll do that. i have a serious habit of getting freakin covered in gear oil as it is. seems that every time i change the gear oil in something i get it all over the place. i'm like a magnet to the stuff.
