Did you pull the tranny or are you going to try and do it in place?

Before you do anything, I would open the side cover and look at the gears. If they are trashed, or have broken teeth, stop now and find another case.

You can take the linkage apart from under the truck, just take a pic first so you remember how it goes. Order new busings for the linkage-that will keep it quiet one rebuilt.

I found it very helpful to do the build with the tranny standing on it's nose and bolted down so it was solid. The whole thing was on wheels so I could roll it around.

Here are a couple of pics that might clarify.

I have rebuilt both the split case and the non split early case the split case was easier to do, I actually had the factory manual from the toyota dealer it was very helpful in doing things in the right order and where to check clearances very quiet after the rebuild.

do you have anymore pics of the platform you built? i want to do the same, but don't want to reinvent the thing

I'll get you some pictures, but I'll let you use the whole thing if you want to come through Sacramento and get it. I call it "the sled" and it worked great for the tranny build and I use it to move heavy stuff around as well. Please remember I am not a carpenter and made this in about an hour. ie, it isn't fancy, but it's perfect for this application.

BTW-your rear axle is under my FJ40.

glad to hear you put the axle to use.

it seems every time i come through sacramento i'm already full of ski gear, go figure. i already have a pallet i've put castors on (it's 10tons of ugly but works fine), i'll probably just adapt your idea to the wider base :cheers

This is a project that has been slated on My To-do-next-list... I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around how the Transmission is going to come out. I've searched the tech links, found some info that included an "H" shaped wooden craddle, but now I can't find it again! I really like the "sled" idea too. Wondering if you had more pics of it (so to get an idea of how to construct my own)? Also would like to know how you got the transmission to stay put like that? what's holding it, bolts?
