What years are compatible?

I have a 74 in my pig. It had a bit of a problem today.

I have a 67, 73, and 83 at the shop.

The 67 and 73 are three speeds. The 83 is a split case. I'd love to put it in whole, but my doubler has a 16 spline output. So I either need to find a 19 spline shaft for my NP203 GRB or a front output assembly for my 4 speed.

Gotta have it done by the Toyota Jambo at the Cliffs in 12 days.

Any idea what might have caused this? Torque or front axle wrap?

Any of the J30, one piece case nose cones will work. Lotsa things can cause this type of failure. It would be good to check the preload after replacement and adjust it if necessary.

yep

Why don't you put the 16 spline input gear from your 74 case into one of your earlier three speed cases, and mount here up. You made need to look at the linkages, but you should be able to reuse those from the 74 as well. Then you have a lower gear ratio and your problem is solved with the busted nose cone.

Can't you just replace the nose cone?

Your 73 should work just fine, the fine spline front output happened in 75 sometime.

I just pulled the nose cone from the 73. It is the same except for the 4wd actuator shaft. The 4speed linkage was further forward. No big deal. I can make it work and I never shift it out of 4wd anyway.

I'll need to replace the rear output shaft seal as well, but I think I can at least get the nose cone on while it's still on the trailer. At least then I can drive it off and onto the hoist.

My '74 linkage is the earlier type.

I guess that depends on how you define earlier.

If your 74 has a four speed, then it's gotta have the 4 speed linkage. The pivot pin is further away from the transfer case. The links have to be longer.

Yes, I have a 4 speed. By earlier I meant it has about 87 pieces and pivot points versus the much simpler later design.
