Hi All,

2010 LX570. Finished a 1500 mile on/off-road trip a few weeks ago. For the past week I've noticed the transfer case is dropping one or two drops of oil on the garage epoxy every few days. Took a look today and wanted to get your thoughts.

The oil is of course dripping off the bottom of the t-case as oil likes to do when guided by gravity. Backtracked it a ways up and noticed some oil splatter where the input of the front shaft is (circled in yellow). Perhaps it's leaking only from there. Dried the seam up to see if any other seepage occurs.

Transfer cases are not my specialty at all, so need to lean on you guys. What are your thoughts on how this looks and what would you do next?

Thanks!

Sounds like an output shaft seal. I don't know how common or how easy/hard to replace on LX.
Are you sure spatter is not from the U joint? Those can spit grease out after servicing them.

I would clean up as much as possible and drive a bit. Hopefully that will make any leaks obvious.

Thanks for reply. I actually did exactly what you mentioned. Cleaned everything up, drove it a bit more, then it was evident that the oil was coming out of front output shaft seal. Took it down to the local ‘Yota shop who put a new seal in for about $300. 👍🏼

That made quick work of it!

From the price, sounds like they were able to do it without removing the transfer case. Assuming they removed the front driveshaft, pulled the seal, and tossed in a new one?

Yeh that’s exactly what they did. Didn’t take them long at all. A $15 seal with $250 of labor is better than a $15 seal with $1200 of labor. I was stoked the t-case didn’t have to come apart..

All good now. 👍🏼
