Trans "clunk" when touching brake pedal in "park". Any ideas?

Just bought a '96 LX with 80K last week, it's been running great. Did the trans fluid flush a few days ago. Didn't seem to improve performance or anything but the old ATF was a little reddish brown compared to new stuff, so I changed it.

Changed the oil and did the spark plugs, rotor and cap tonight. When I was backing it out of the garage I noticed that the tranny "clunks" when you're in park and touch the brake pedal (the exact moment the brake lights come on). I can't believe I wouldn't have noticed this before, but I didn't do anything related to the trans tonight. The ONLY thing I touched that was trans related tonight was the trans cable that comes off the throttle body, had to remove it from the mount to make the plug wires easier to get to. I only loosened the nut on one side and retightened it on the same side to make sure I didn't change the adjustment any. I suppose it's possible the adjustment could have changed, but it couldn't have been much.

Anyone have any ideas about the "clunk"? Seems fine when in reverse and drive, it only happens in park.

According to my crummy Hayes manual, it could be the "shift lock solenoid". The clunk sounds just like a solenoid, and it's coming directly from the shifter housing area. Makes sense.

Odd that I never noticed it until now, must usually have the radio on I guess...

(Suppose I could delete this thread, but maybe some other JONG will wonder about the same thing so I'll leave it up.)

Yep - solenoid for shift interlock. Thank the Audi debacle for that (not Audi's fault, BTW).

That's the one. Some are noisier than others, and it definitely is a sound you have to get used to; doesn't sound right at all. But it will keep you from driving the car through the back of the garage, I suppose ;) .

Good researching.
