when going along at nominal speeds like maybe 30mph, then you get on it for a second will suddenly kind of chug/klunk when it shifts when slowing down.

No noise is made , you can just feel it happening. Or when you are at a complete stop and accelerate to shifting speed it will do that esp. when slowing down.

P.s. this is an automatic:beer:

I'm not following you: In each paragraph it sounds like you're starting to say that it happens when accelerating, but then in each case you tack on "when slowing down".

when the vehicle shifts into say 2nd gear, then there is a stop sign(grocery getter wife veh) sign , so it shifts then a sudden jolt coming into the stop sign.

I hope that nails it if not I gotta go to the dreaded mechanic:beer:

If you're accelerating, then let off the gas as the tranny shifts, it will give you a clunk feel. That's normal. If you are in high gear and slow gradually and feel clunks when it shifts down, that's odd.

SJ,
Do a search for "Clunk". Maybe one of the many threads out there will answer your question.

My $.02

From what I understand there is play in the drive train of our 80s and this clunking is entirely normal and not a problem.
I have it and I think inquired about it years ago on the 80scool list and got the answer I posted.

Similar experience with my 80. From what I've read (lots of info about it) its a common problem, and not to be worried about. Sounds like its general wear and slop in the drive train, along with a little harder downshift than normal.

Could be something more serious, but I'm choosing to not worry about mine until it shows signs of getting worse.

I'll go with that, that is a big 10-4:beer:
