i actually purchased my 93 cruiser last feb., and i have never changed my tranny fluid in this time, i did not know when the last owner serviced the tranny, i checked the tranny oil level and it doesent need any oil and also the oil does not look worned out(still really red)basically i was wondering if you guys think i should just go ahead and fluish the whole thing and put in new tranny oil. my cruiser has 175,000 miles and runs perfect( i want to keep it that way) i actually heard that it is not all that great to change tranny oil on cars with really high mileage? what do you guys think. Let me know what you guys would if you guys were under this same situation. oh yeah how many qts of oil does a stck tranny take? thanks for any help.

mine has 155,000 and just did mine last weekend. I used Mobil 1 syn. When i drained the oil out of the tranny, it still looked red also but i went ahead and finished the process. I figure doing it about 3 times within a couple of weeks should result in an almost 100% fluid exchange. But, yes i would do it anyways. Can't be too safe.

I would just do a drain and refill the next 2-3 engine oil changes. I shy away from fluid exchanges when you don't know the history of the vehicle, as the new fluid with a replenish additive package may cause deposits to break loose and clog small passages. The gradual replacement of fluid seems to avoid this.

Others have also posted to Cary's reccomendation about doing the gradual drain/fill replacement program. You'll usually get 2.5-4qts out on a drain. I don't know the exact total quantity, but IIRC it is 16-18 qts or so. I drain and fill 3 or so qts with every oil change. I use Mobil dino version of ATF, so the cost of 3 qts every 3-4 months is pretty cheap PM to keep the fluid fresh.

yea, i basically ment gradually. I just didn't do the exchange at one time using the method in the FAQ section. Too much $$ in fluid at one time for my wallet.
