Took the 62 in to Aamco to get it looked at and of course they said the tranny is shot. Quoted me $1600-$1800 for a rebuild, is this a good price? That price comes with a 12/12000 warranty. I'm in a pinch. I am thinking of selling it and part of me doesn't. If I was to sell it would I be better off paying to have the tranny rebuilt and ask for $5k or should I just try to sell it as is for $3k ? Other than the tranny issue, she is in awesome shape, extremely clean. What would you guys do?

I'd fix it and keep driving it. If you really want to sell it, fix it and sell it.

16-1800 is a great price... but if you let those guys fix it, I'd sell it fast. Most rebuilds on these trannys are crap jobs. I paid twice that for my rebuild (including the t-case) and I am not 100% satisfied with it. If I have to do it again (or rather when) I will either go with an Extreme from Rodney in OZ or throw in an H55 manual.

If you're interested in Selling without fixing the Transmission Give me a holler
I may be interested in it. I've been interested in attempting a tranny rebuild.
I work in Cartersville, Ga. and wouldn't mind taking a look at it. Let me know.

Chain/franchise auto repair shops are generally ripoff artists. Find a 4x4 shop to R&R the trans & get a heavy-duty rebuild by one of the independent shops recommended on this board.

How about get a used one with low mileage from cruiserparts for $750.

http://www.cruiserparts.net/parts/fj60.htm

From what I heard you would be better off doing that then paying some mechanic at a local transmission shop $$$. If you are going to have it rebuild, get a recommedation from someone on here or I know the best place is a guy in Australia that knows how to rebuild them right.

So what exactly is your transmission doing? Slipping?

There isn't any shops around here that is recommended I don't think. Don't even get me started on Mr. Dearborn.

It takes awhile for it to engage upon startup. Once it is warm it will shift out fine throughout your ride but if it has been sitting awhile, it takes it a few minutes for it to actually engage after putting it in gear. I had it rebuilt from a local shop a few years back and they didn't install the kickdown cable properly. I got that ironed out but not before the overheat light came on 7-8 times on a trip while going to pick up a motorcycle. I pulled over and let it cool down everytime it came on but that may not have been well enough. I dropped $1200 in it 4-5 months ago and let Urban Landcruisers do a tranny service, install a kickdown cable and replace my gaskets throughout the engine to try to fix some leaks, now it pukes oil.

About an 1 1/2 hours north of you is a really great and fair mechanic. His name is Jeff and he runs Jeff's Automotive in Dahlonega, GA. His contact info is:

Jeff's Automotive Inc
2227 Oak Grove Rd, Dahlonega, GA
(706) 864-2277

When I first got my cruiser, and immediately moved to Ga, it had some issues and it took him a little while (waiting for parts mostly), but it got done and he ended up charging me less than quoted due to the time frame!! I know he also fixes a gray 62 from Dahlonega (we were both there at the same time once). While he's not an expert on toyota's (I don't think so anyway) he is a great guy and runs a good shop.

Maybe worth checking out...if you do go there ask him if he remembers a brown 60 from a couple years ago that the shop named "Sweet August" and if he does tell 'em I sent ya!! {and, yes, it took the entire month of august to fix it!!}

I sure do miss Georgia!!

Cheers,
Matt

Like nancy ray-gun said - 'just say no!' (to aamco)

if you want to use a rebuilder, then definitely find out from you local mechanic guys who they use in your neck of the woods. find an old shop with experience and someone you can rely on. chain transmission rebuilders are an awful lot like chain auto body shops. better to avoid them. IMHO.
