ok, so i was driving home the other night, and i stopped the car to let my sister get out, and i put it in park for about 2 or 3 mintues. went to go put it in gear, and the rpm's lowered so much, that it stalled out. rpms at park idle were about 900. drving up a small hill, going about 30, the car kicks into overdrive (4th) on the 62 auto tranny, and the engine stalls again. when i put it in nuetral, the car started again, but for some reason, on its own., i never turned the key. after driving it a bit more, i had come to a stop light. while taking off from the light going easy on the gas, it does it again, no gas, and i had to turn the key this time. it does it once more, and this time started back up by itself. i drove the rest of the way home, about 2 miles, with the tranny being in 3rd gear, with no problem. a short while later, i took it back out, to see if i could narrow the problem down by myself and no one else being in the car, getting worried, and talking loudly. parked it, shut it off, restarted, threw it in reverse this time, and stalled out. tranny shifted into OD on the way home, and stalled again. drove home in 3rd, with no problems.

What is the deal?

oh yeah....sorry so long, needed to give you the entire lowdown

Bump.

When you say it starts on its own, you mean it catches without the starter, right?

It doesn't make sense to me that the problem is in the tranny. The tranny doesn't give feedback to the engine, other than through the crankshaft and maybe a touch through the kickdown cable. The only "electronics" are the ATF temp switch, and the neutral start switch (I think). I don't believe there are any vacuum lines to the tranny either.

Does it stay running with more throttle and only stall when coasting or light load? Or does it stall out with decent throttle too?

Hmmmmm.

its done it once or twice at decent throttle. when it started on its own, the truck was completely off, all lights on the dash were on, as if the key was in the on posistion, and i didnt even turn the key, let alone reach for it, when the thing fired right back up. today, i went wheeling, and had not one problem with it, i dont know what the deal is. but if it goes...hello h55. haha, and the 350 swap :)

It should, think about engine braking. The only thing is, it has to be in gear already, so you can't coast start like with a manual.
