I have noticed when my 60 is idling, with the clutch not pressed, it makes a grinding, spinning noise. When I depress the clutch to take off it goes away. The possibility of me being incorrect is pretty good, but doesn't the throw out bearing make noise with the clutch pressed when it is going out? Any, ideas on the noise and repair would be great. Thanks.

Yeah somethin is out of whack....lol... was gonna say it might be your synchro but that usually happens when shifting. Hey come to the SC web thread on here, we have an upstate cruisers club, you need to come wheel and wrench with us. Trust me you bring it up here we'll have it purrin by the time ya go home, or we'll just beat it with a BFH till it works.

It's probobly the TO bearing, Mine makes a bit of a 'humming' noise. Nothing major to worry about from what I hear, unless it's really loud?

If you have to change the TO bearing you might as well do some other preventative maintenance while you're in there. Rear main, inspect the clutch... etc.

I noticed the exact scenario in my '83 60 on my last road trip. Don't know what it is though.

Yes. Throwout bearing, mine does it too. I have no idea how loud is normal vice "about to blow". As far as inspecting the clutch if you're doing the TO bearing, I think most would say to just replace it if you're in there.

I have only the experience of owning 2 different 60's to go on, but... a low level[too faint to hear on a busy city street w/ the window open and traffic all around] grinding, spinning noise with a faint clacking/knocking mixed in while idling in neutral is normal for a 60 trans with some miles on it, and it could easily continue making such noises for another 100K miles or so. It will be a little louder once warmed up as after a long drive. If possible have an experienced L/C tech listen to it to put your mind at ease.

About 10 years ago I had similar noise when not in gear, however, not horrible grinding. Went away when the clutch was depressed. Mechanic said it was the transmission input bearing... goes away with clutch as tranny input shaft is no longer turning. They got it fixed, as far as I know the TOB was not changed. Now about 100k miles later it's doing it again, but not to the point of concern.

Pluton is closest to right. It's most likely the input shaft bearing, which for wahtever reason tend to develop the noise with high miles. TO bearings usually make noise with the clutch engaged.

Tranny noise

My FJ60 does the same thing...it's the gearbox itself, most likely the input shaft bearing. To replace this bearing requires dismantling the gearbox and also involves special tools. I'm not too worried about it for it still shifts fine. You may want to check the oil level in your transfer case and gearbox. If the seal between the two has gone bad, your transfer case will be oil starved and the gearbox will be overfilled. An overfilled gearbox is a bad thing. You could try changing to a heavier gear oil and see if that quiets things down; (Swepco is the best.) With mine, I'm just going to wait until the noise gets really bad and then upgrade to the 5-speed.

I'm having a similar problem on my 85 FJ60. It's more of a squeal than a grinding noise when the clutch in NOT pressed. The squeal stops if the clutch is pressed even an inch. I had it inspected and they diagnosed it as a "dry nose on the transmission" what the heck does that mean?? If it is the TOB is there a way to lube it to stop making noise?

My 1984 FJ60 has done the same thing for ever now. A good local tranny shop said it was probably the input shaft bearing. They had told me I could replace it if I wanted to with a tranny rebuild or just go until something happened and do it then.

That was 7yrs ago, 50,000miles. We have done long trips, 4wheeling, towing, the works. Noise still there... I only panic when it get quiet.
