Truck.

1990 4X4 22RE 5 speed 213,000 Miles. I have owned it since 10K. Do all my own maintenance.

The Bad.

I have never pulled anything with this truck and a couple of weeks ago I hooked up a small trailer with a couple of dirt bikes on it and did a 1000 mile trip over a week.

I now have a bad tranny noise. Its a loud gear noise in 1, 2, 3, and 5th. 4th for some reason sounds fine at any speed. It has a new clutch in it 17,000 miles ago that I did myself with all Toyota parts. I can push the clutch in sitting still and you dont here it. Clutch out, you can here the noise. Cruising down the road, I can push clutch in and throw it into neutral no noise. Noise gets faster while going through the gears but doesnt change pitch. I blew a pinion bearing in the rear end one time and it was Howling kind of noise. This isnt like that. More gear sounding. I havent dropped any fluid yet but Im thinking it may be the Throw out bearing on the clutch already. Any thoughts???

4th gear is direct drive, no intermediate gears or shafts are being used. It's common to be quieter in this gear.

It doesn't really matter what the problem is, it has to be rebuilt. At 213K, it doesn't owe you anything, you've got your money's worth out of it. Call around, find a shop that does bench work, pull it out and drop it off. Shouldn't be more than $200-300 for the labor. You can find rebuild kits on eBay, or go with OEM parts. Put it back in, drive it for another 200K.

Cool guys, thanks a lot. That confirms what I was thinking. I thought that maybe 4th had something to do with being on a different shaft or direct like you said and not using other shafts or gears. I almost didnt even mention it but I thought what the heck, it mite help. Good to know.

Thanks again.

Hey actually i have a toyota and by the way you explained what is going on with your transmission, i couldnt explain it better myself. I took the tranny out and had it looked at and the tranny guy told me the bearings were just getting old and do to excess heat they might be noisey. So i put it back in and it has been running every since and it has been a couple months. He said it could out last the life of the truck or it could break in a couple weeks. You shouldnt have a problem and to fix it will cost u around 800-1000 because the parts are getting really expensive. hope this helps
