So I thought I'd share, even though I feel kinda dumb in talking about what I learned. Have had the 80 for a few years, and only recently drove another one. Was amazed at how much better an 80 could accelerate if the tranny kicked-down correctly. Even though the tranny kick-down cable seemed adjusted correctly, I played around with it for awhile, but couldn't get it to kick down correctly. Seriously bummed - I was looking forward to the free extra power! While sitting in a plane this week, it occured to me that maybe the throttle cable could be out of adjustment? I had time to play with it this afternoon and discovered that the throttle cable had 3/8" of slack...fixed that and now it kicks down just like a champ!

What kind of problems were you having? I think mine may need adjustment too. When I need to down shift I really have to step on the throttle and when it does its kinda rough. I also plan to clean the butterfly in the intake. When I start from a stop you have to apply alot of pressure on the petal and when it does go it jerks. I started noticing all these things after I bought an altima to commute to and from work.

I think any Cruiser at or over 100k probably needs both of these cables adjusted, or at least inspected. There's definitely no reason to not have your rig downshifting when/where you want it to.

The FSM gives a speed range for each gear. My 80 would kick-down only at the lower end of the speed range, not the upper end. So, for example regarding 2nd gear, it would downshift at 22- 25 mph, but not at 30+mph.
