excuse this question if it's been asked previously. own a 2007 fj cruiser. purchased new in april, last year. vehicle's been flawless however, today, placed it into 4wd which from the onset has been an issue, VERY difficult to get it back into neutal. this evening it wouldn't come out of 4wd. i do this routinely, every 30-45 days, then, driving it a few miles. with gas prices, this is a killer as now, the truck appears/acts stuck in 4wd. have an automatic, almost 12K miles. the 4wd shifter moves as if it's in neutal but obviously isn't according to both dash display and 4wd action. in a bind because i'm traveling monday, and the beast is SUCKIN' down the fuel. thoughts, suggestions!? thnx,

Howdy! It won't do you any good before Monday, but this should be a dealer service item. I'd borrow/rent a car and put the FJ into the dealer ASAP. John

If you've driven it on pavement in 4WD, you have the driveline bound up. The auto doesn't have a center diff so it's part-time 4WD. Try jacking a tire off the ground or drive it on gravel or sand SOON to alleviate the bind.

Along with old fart four wheel drive is designed for use in poor traction ie snow, ice, gravel, dirt... I certainly wouldn't recomend driving in FWD on pavement, especially at highway speed's. The automatic transmition version of the FJC is not designed as an all wheel drive and per the manual should not be driven in FWD over...45 MPH I believe it says.

Take it to the Dealer. If it needs to sleep there, you're still under Warranty, your Toyota rental will be included.

As said above don't drive an AT FJC on the road in 4WD, backing up might free the transfer case.

I believe some of the 2007 FJCs had an issue with the transfer case shifter where it won't shift out of 4WD. So get it to the dealer and have them fix it. Let them look for TSBs (service bulletins) for your model year.

It was only a few of the 6MT's that had a problem with the TC's not shifting out of 4LL.

We still don't know what tranny he has.

According to his post, it's an auto.
